Box Score Medford, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles women's soccer team (10-8-1) advanced to the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Tournament by virtue of a 5-0 quarterfinal round victory over the Gators of the Sage Colleges (6-8) Sunday afternoon. Led by an offensive outburst from freshman Victoria Hassett (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), who tied a St. Joseph's College record with four goals in a contest, the Eagles will now travel to play the top-seeded Blue Knights of Mount Saint Mary College this Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Newburgh, N.Y.
SJC took an early lead at the 2:41 mark of the game as Hassett put in a cross from Elizabeth Pulaski (North Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). The rookie forward had help on her second goal in the 29th minute with an assist from Kristen McLoughlin (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and Gina Guardino (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, N.Y/St. John the Baptist) was credited with the assist on Hassett's fourth tally. McLoughlin added a late score of her own in the 71st minute.
Senior goalkeeper Michelle Gulino (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had one save and was credited with her fourth shutout of the season.
The winner of the Skyline Conference Tournament receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Eagles are striving to capture their first Skyline title and advance to the NCAA's for the first time.
