Men's Soccer Slays Mt. St. Mary Knights for Big Skyline 'W'

Box Score

Newburgh, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's (5-11, 3-3 Skyline) men soccer team took down the first place Mount St. Mary College Knights (8-3-1, 5-1 Skyline), 3-1, in Skyline Conference action on Saturday.  The Golden Eagles handed the Knights their first conference defeat of the season and leap into position for a Skyline Tournament berth, as they currently stand in fourth place. SJC's junior midfielder Justin Heredia (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) helped lead his team past Mount St. Mary with his two goals and one assist.

At 20:23, the Golden Eagles scored the initial goal of the contest when Heredia successfully converted off a Chris Hall (Mastic, N.Y. / William Floyd) corner kick.

The St. Joseph's College defense played strong throughout the first half by restricting the Knight's offense to only one shot-on-goal.

Heredia's early goal marked the only tally of the first half as SJC took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the 59th minute the Golden Eagles were able to tally their second goal of the game when Alex Guadagno (South Setuaket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) blasted a shot from the top of box past the Knight's goalkeeper via a Heredia cross.

The Knights responded late when they slipped in a goal from inside the box at 84:32.  Two minutes later, St. Joseph's crushed any hope for a comeback when Heredia scored his second goal of the game, ending the contest at 3-1.

St. Joseph's outshot Mount Saint Mary 11-4 and had two more corner kick opportunities than the Knights, a tally of 4-2.

SJC goalkeeper Avery Gomez (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) recorded one save on the night and picked up his fifth win of the season.

After three consecutive road games for the Golden Eagles, they will return home Monday night to take on non-conference opponent New Jersey City University (1-11-3) at 7:00 p.m.  They will then face Skyline foes Mt. St. Vincent, Farmingdale and Maritime to close out the regular season schedule over the next two weeks.
