Clean Sweep For Volleyball as They Lock-Up Skyline Two-Seed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bronxville, N.Y. — The Golden Eagles (19-10, SKY 8-1) finished off their regular season on Saturday brilliantly, sweeping both Purchase State (2-26, 0-8 Skyline) and Sarah Lawrence (3-21, SKY 1-7), winning six consecutive sets and earning an 8-1 conference record as they head into postseason play.

Purchase didn't stand a chance against the Lady Eagles. SJC won the first set swiftly 25-6 - five of the six points they let up being their own errors. The next two sets went very much the same way, with the Eagles finding little to no resistance from the Purchase Panthers who couldn't seem to get in a groove. With sets two and three ending 25-5 and 25-7, respectively, the match ended with SJC winning 3-0.

Most every Golden Eagle was able to contribute to this win in one way or another, as players stepped up impressively all over the court. Samantha Jacoby (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot) led her team in kills with nine while Jessica Monteserrato (Wantagh, N.Y./ Mepham) logged 16 assists. Kristin Crudele (Islip, N.Y./ Islip) had six service aces and Brianna Wolf (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) had seven digs.

The Golden Eagles' first set against Sarah Lawrence seemed to be a continuation of their previous match as they immediately jumped ahead to an 11-1 lead. Ultimately the set ended 25-6 soon after. Sarah Lawrence seemed to be motivated by this and fought hard in the second set, forcing the Eagles to push back for the first time of the day. SJC ultimately won the set, but by a much smaller margin, 25-19.

Sarah Lawrence was then given a spark of hope by their own performance in the second set, enough so that they were able to earn an 8-6 lead in the third. The Eagles finally regrouped and got each other back on track, quickly regained the lead and went on a fourteen-point run. The home team took their last gasp for breath toward the end of the set, going on a run of three and then officially petering out. With a score of 25-11, SJC took the second match of the day and consequently ended their season on two high notes.

Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) reclaimed her usual seat as the team leader in kills, slamming down seven to help her team in the win. Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y./ Bellport) had ten digs and Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./ Bethpage) grabbed ten assists.

The Golden Eagles will travel to the Skyline Conference Fall Festival at Purchase on Friday as the #2-seed to compete in the Skyline Conference Tournament Semifinal against a challenger still to be determined.
