Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team came out strong on their home court Tuesday afternoon to defeat Brooklyn 8-1 at the Outdoor Field Complex. Picking up its seventh straight win, the Golden Eagles move to 7-1 on the season and Brooklyn slides to 2-4 on the year.
The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start, taking the first doubles point for the sixth time this season, as the tandem of
Rita Wehrli and
Erika Hesselbirg defeated Emiliya Poptsova and Ashley Rivera 8-0. Next,
Victoria Makulik and
Victoria Panicola defeated Diana Beshta and Lauren Marino 8-1 to claim the second doubles point.
To round out the doubles results, Suraya Maenhout and Shannel Johnson lost to Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath 8-4.
The Golden Eagles kept the momentum going in singles play, as Panicola handed a quick defeat to Rivera 6-0, 6-0. Hesselbirg also defeated her opponent Poptsova 6-0, 6-0.
Wehrli defeated Lauren Marino 6-2, while Makulik defeated Beshta in 6-3, 6-0.
McGrath defeated Johnson 6-2, 6-0.
Merker fought hard through a tiebreaker and but fell just short of the win as she dropped her match 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
The Golden Eagles will play next on Friday, October 9 against cross-town rivals Farmingdale State at 5:00 PM at the Outdoor Field Complex.
