Men's Soccer Closes Out Regular Season with 2-1 Loss at Mt. St. Mary

Box Score

Newburgh, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Skyline Conference rival Mount St. Mary College in its final game of the 2018 regular season on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip to 8-8-1 overall on the year and 5-4-1 in conference play and earn the sixth seed in the conference championship. The Knights (12-5-1) move to 8-1-1 in Skyline play and clinch the first seed.

Mt. St. Mary opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Matthew Wyant scored off a free kick outside of the box.

Anthony Gugliemo doubled the hosts' lead in the 21st minute, enabling the Knights to take a 2-0 lead into the second half.

Fourteen minutes after the break the Golden Eagles broke through when freshman Joel Ulloa deposited a free kick off the foot of sophomore Alan Ponieman to cut the lead in half (2-1). But from there the Knights closed up shop and rode out their one-goal lead to the final buzzer.

Sophomore keeper Tyler Flaherty made seven saves for the guests while MSMC's Tyler Rapp was credited with two.

The Knights outshot the Golden Eagles 11-6 in the contest. Both sides won three corners apiece.

The Golden Eagles begin their quest for a Skyline Conference title when they visit third-seeded USMMA in the first round on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 pm.
