Springfield, MA| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball suffered a pair of defeats to #1 Springfield and #13 Wentworth in a non-conference tri-match in Springfield, MA on Saturday afternoon.
The losses snap the Golden Eagles' four-game winning streak and send them to 7-5 overall on the year. Springfield improves ro 12-1 and Wentworth to 9-3.
Springfield 3, SJC 0
After dropping the first set 25-13, SJC took a 21-20 lead late in the second and looked poised to even up the match, but the nation's top-ranked team scored five of the frame's final six points to edge the Golden Eagles 25-22.
In the third, Springfield jumped out to a huge 17-5 lead en route to a 25-15 victory to clinch the 3-0 sweep.
In a match that saw St. Joseph's generate 35 kills, sophomore Paul Curaro led the way with a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore Matthew Amberge contributed eight kills.
Senior Tyler Jones dished out 32 assists and sophomore Will Flohr was credited with five digs.
Wentworth 3, SJC 0
A first-set thriller saw the two sides play to a 25-25 tie, but it was Wentworth that tallied consecutive points to take the frame, 27-25, and go up 1-0 in the match.
Wentworth fended off the Golden Eagles in the second, winning it by a 25-20 scoreline, but was met by an energized opponent in the third. Down 19-15, SJC rattled off four-straight points to tie the set at 19, but Wentworth regrouped and earned the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Curaro and Flohr each contributed 10 kills apiece, and Jones was credited with a game-high 29 assists.
Flohr and Amberge led St. Joseph's with six digs each.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 24 when they host #14 New Paltz and Emmanuel for a non-conference tri-match inside the Danzi Center at 11:00 am.
