Men's Basketball Secures First Win Over Brockport

Results:
The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team earned their first win of the season with a hard-fought 76-70 victory over SUNY Brockport in a non-conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Tuesday evening. Senior Spencer Malloy recorded the 651st rebound of his career in the win to set a new program record, then he finished the game with 661 in his career.

Top performers:
  • Senior Alec Tabada recorded a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead SJLI, while adding a game-high five assists and two steals. He shot 9-for-14 from the field
  • Malloy secured a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds
  • Graduate Student Justin Forest scored 20 points with six rebounds and four assists
  • Brockport was led by a 21-point performance by Tony Arnold, who also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double
  • Alex Tavarez contributed 15 points and three rebounds
  • Jakhi Lucas added a game-high five steals
How it happened:
  • Brockport built a 7-2 lead in the game's first two minutes, with a three by Lucas getting the scoring started for the visitors
  • The hosts came within one on three occasions in the next three and a half minutes, as they trailed 11-10 after Tabada made a jumper at the 12:33 mark
  • Brockport took a 13-10 lead, then SJLI's Forest made a three to tie the game at 13 with 11:55 on the clock
  • The visitors took back a 16-13 lead right away on a three-point play by Tavarez at the 11:43 mark
  • SJLI tied the game at 17 shortly after on a basket for Tabada with 9:57 on the clock, then Brockport went on a 7-1 run to take a lead of 24-18 with 7:48 remaining
  • Forest and Tabada each made three-point baskets to keep SJLI close, then another Tabada basket cut the hosts' deficit to one (29-28) at the 2:38 mark
  • Brockport scored four of the final six points to finish the half, as the visitors went into the break ahead 33-30
  • Sophomore Kenny Rodriguez made a basket to get the scoring of the second half started to trim the deficit to one, then the visitors took a lead of five (37-32) on four points scored by Arnold
  • St. Joseph's proceeded to take their first lead since the opening possession, as Malloy followed Forest's three-point play with a layup to put the hosts in the lead 39-38 with 17:25 on the clock
  • The hosts increased the lead to five (45-40) on a layup for junior Justin Turner about five minutes into the half
  • A three for Forest shortly after put SJLI ahead by six (48-42) at the 13:55 mark
  • St. Joseph's continued to increase their lead, as a three for Tabada and a layup for Rodriguez gave SJLI a lead of 11 (60-49) for their largest lead of the night with 8:52 remaining
  • SJLI made 10 free throws down the stretch to help them keep a lead over Brockport. Malloy's pair of free throws at the 5:37 mark gave the hosts a 10-point lead (67-57)
  • Brockport came within six of SJLI's lead on three occasions and within five once in the game's final four minutes, but St. Joseph's was able to hold off the visitors and retain their lead, as they defeated Brockport for their first win of the 2024-25 season by a score of 76-70

  • St. Joseph's shot 49.1% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc
  • Brockport posted a 34.7% shooting percentage overall and 15.8% from three-point range
  • SJLI held the advantage in rebounds (45-39) and points in the paint (34-28)
  • Brockport received 36 bench points compared to SJLI's 10
