Men's Volleyball Picks Up a Pair of Non-Conference Wins

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball picked up two non-conference wins in the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took down Elmira College 3-1 before wrapping up the day with a 3-2 victory over Lancaster Bible College.

Top Performers:
 

  • Senior Quinn Foglia led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills while hitting at a .789 clip and recorded five blocks

  • Senior Mark Williams added 13 kills and three service aces and finished with four digs 

  • Senior Tyler Anderson pitched in with eight kills and a season-best nine blocks

  • Senior setter CJ Johnson tossed 36 assists while picking up eight digs and knocking down five kills

  • The Soaring Eagles were led by an 18-kill performance by Edwin Sosa who added 10 digs and three blocks

  • Jordan Peiser pitched in with 16 kills, eight digs, and seven blocks

  • Setter Neil Rea dished 43 assists 

How it happened:
 

  • The Golden Eagles opened up the first frame with four unanswered points before building a double-figure lead at 12-2. The home team maintained a healthy advantage throughout the set cruising to a 25-18 win

  • Set two opened with an exchange of points before three straight Elmira points gave the Soaring Eagles a 9-6 lead. SJLI inched back to knot the score at 11. Both sides traded points before the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run to lead 19-12. Elmira never regained momentum as SJLI secured set two 25-19

  • Elmira led throughout the majority of set three until a 7-0 run by the Golden Eagles tied the score at 16. Both sides went point for point until at 23-23, the Soaring Eagles put away the next two to stay alive with a 25-23 win

  • A closely played set four saw the team tied at 12 before a couple of Elmira attack errors saw SJLI take a slight 14-12 lead. Later on, an EC service error extended St. Joseph's advantage to five, 20-15, before claiming the 25-20 win

Top Performers:

  • Williams led the Golden Eagles with 21 kills and finished with 11 digs

  • Luke MacPherson finished with 11 kills and 10 digs

  • Johnson tossed a match-best 49 assists while adding 10 digs and three blocks 

  • Libero Joe Pinner picked up a team-high 18 digs with Foglia recording seven blocks

  • Jordan Yoder led the Chargers with 13 kills and 15 digs

  • Setter Christian Herr dished 47 assists and libero Ben Latham picked up 18 digs

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's jumped to a 7-1 early in set one and kept the game out of reach for the Chargers sailing to a 25-17 win

  • The second set was closely played and with the scored tied at 18, the Golden Eagles rattled off five straight points bookended by kills from Foglia and went ahead 23-18 before claiming the 25-22 win

  • Set three went point for point until three unanswered LBC points broke a 20-20 stalemate, 23-20. SJLI managed to get within one, 24-23, but a kill from LBC's Nicholas Marion gave the Chargers a 25-23 win and semt the match to a fourth set

  • Neither side led by more than three points in the fourth frame and with the score knotted at 24, LBC's Carson Hoover served up two aces for the 26-24 win and pushing the match to a decisive fifth set

  • The Golden Eagles went on the dominate in set five and breezed to a 15-6 win

The Golden Eagles open up Skyline Conference play when they face Yeshiva University and Manhattanville College on Sunday, March 3rd. Game times are set for 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
