Men's Volleyball Falls to #1 Southern Virginia in NCAA First-Round

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team saw its season end with a 3-0 loss to undefeated #1 Southern Virginia University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening.

Records:

Top Performers:

  • Senior Tyler Anderson finished with a team-best 10 kills with a .333 hitting percentage with seven digs and two blocks

  • Senior Mark Williams added eight kills, seven digs, and a block

  • Sophomore Luke MacPherson also added eight kills and a match-high 11 digs

  • Senior setter CJ Johnson dished 24 assists with three digs and two kills

How it happened:

  • The first frame didn't see a lead larger than three with both sides exchanging points through the midway point of the set. SVU held a slight 20-19 lead before three different Knights knocked down kills giving them their largest lead, 23-19. The Golden Eagles closed the gap to two, but the hosts went on to claim a 25-22 win. Anderson and Williams finished the set with five kills apiece

  • Set two looked very similar with neither side able to pull away. Southern Virginia held a slight three-point advantage on a couple of occasions late in the set before a kill from Jeremy Brown secured the 25-22 win for the Knights. MacPherson recorded three kills and three digs

  • St. Joseph's stayed close early in the third frame trailing by just one at 6-5, before a 4-0 run by Southern Virginia doubled their advantage to 10-5. SJLI chipped away inching to within two, 20-18, but the Knights went on to finish the set on a 5-0 run to finish the match with a 25-18 win

Notes:

  • As a team, St. Joseph's (L.I.) was held to a .181 hitting percentage while Southern Virginia finished at .346

  • The Knights had a strong showing at the net recording 10.5 total team blocks to SJLI's four
