Men's Volleyball Starts Skyline Play with a Pair of Sweeps

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team opened up Skyline Conference play with a pair of sweeps over SUNY Old Westbury and the University of Mt. St. Vincent in the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Match One: St. Joseph's 3, Old Westbury 0

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 3-6, 1-0 Skyline; Old Westbury, 3-6, 1-2 Skyline

Top Performers:

  • Juniors Luke MacPherson and Hank Foglia finished with a match-bet six kills apiece. MacPherson added five kills and an ace. Foglia posted a .455 hitting percentage and a team-high four blocks

  • Freshman Bryan Frascogna had five kills while hitting at a .400 clip

  • Setters Will Kropp and Dominic Ruggiero tossed 20 and 15 assists, respectively 

  • Damien Villamil led the Panthers with five kills, with Liam Eisel pitching in with four

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles held a 10-5 lead early in set one but the Panthers inched back to within two, 12-10. The next four points went in favor of SJLI and they kept a good distance, claiming the 25-20 win

  • The hosts took an early 10-2 lead in set two, en route to a double-digit lead throughout most of the frame, eventually taking the 25-11 win. Foglia had four kills on seven attempts and recorded four blocks

  • An 8-0 run by Old Westbury later in set three saw the Panthers ahead 20-17. The Golden Eagles quickly tied it up at 20 and after an exchange of points, completed the sweep with a 25-23 win

 

Match Two: St. Joseph's 3, Mt. St. Vincent 0

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 4-6, 2-0 Skyline; UMSV 3-7, 2-1 Skyline

Top Performers:

  • MacPherson led the Golden Eagles with a match-best nine kills while hitting .500 The junior also served a match-high six aces

  • Graduate student Tyler Anderson added five kills and freshman Cole Violi had four kills in four attempts with a match-high six digs

  • Kropp dished 13 assists 

  • James Rose and Tyler Hanna led the Dolphins with five kills apiece

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles hit a match-high .562 in the opening set and held the Dolphins to just nine points, 25-9. MacPherson finished with five kills with Violi pitching with two along with five digs

  • St. Joseph's completed its second sweep of the day with 25-16 and 25-17 wins in sets two and three, respectively

Up next:

The Golden Eagles resume Skyline Conference play when they host New Jersey City University on Monday, March 3rd at 7:00 pm.
