Men's Lacrosse Opens Conference Play with Loss to UMSV

When and Where:

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team drops its first Skyline Conference matchup to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 18-10, on Wednesday evening.

Top performers:

  • Senior Nik Allen led the Golden Eagles with two goals, a team-high eight ground balls, and a game-high four caused turnovers, to go along with six faceoff wins
  • Senior Connor Owenburg recorded two goals, two ground balls, and one caused turnover
  • Sophomore Matt Cioffi added two goals and two assists
  • Sophomore Caden Stubba totaled two goals, one assist, and one ground ball
  • Sophomore Najee Henderson finished with one goal and two assists

How it happened:

  • The University of Mount Saint Vincent took control early in the game, scoring the first five goals in the first ten minutes of action before Allen scored back-to-back goals for St. Joseph's 
  • UMSV responded by scoring another two goals to make it a 7-2 game before Henderson found the back of the net with just 21 seconds left in the first quarter to make it a four-point game 
  • The Dolphins would go on another scoring run in the first ten minutes of action in the second quarter, as they outscored SJLI 5-2, to hold a seven-goal lead (12-5) with 5:38 left in the half
  • Owenburg would net one goal before the Dolphins responded 40 seconds later, as both teams entered halftime with the score 13-6 in favor of UMSV
  • Both teams would trade goals in the third quarter, each finding the back of the net three times, as the final quarter got underway with the score 16-9
  • Anthony Herrera would score the first goal of the final quarter to cut the deficit to just six with 8:36 left in the game 
  • The University of Mount Saint Vincent scored the final two goals of the contest as they secured the victory

Notes:

  • Julian Gonzalez made 15 saves, allowing 18 goals on 33 shots on goal
  • The Golden Eagles scooped up 28 ground balls to the Dolphins' 52
  • SJLI caused 12 turnovers to UMSV's nine
