Men's Volleyball Opens Conference Play with a Win over UMSV

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) Golden Eagles defeated the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins 3-1 in their Skyline Conference season opener.

Top performers:

  • Declan Kerns paced the Golden Eagles with 15 kills on 33 attempts (.364 hitting percentage), adding 10 digs.
  • Chris Sarnicola contributed 10 kills (.261 hitting) and a team-high 14 digs.
  • Shaun Mischler added 10 kills, four service aces, and three digs.
  • Chase Meyer recorded eight  kills on 12 attempts with two blocks (assisted).
  • Dominic Ruggiero dished out 37 assists, collected 12 digs, and added one kill and three blocks assisted.

How it happened:

  • The first set saw a closely contested back and forth through the first points of the match, before the Golden Eagles went on a six point scoring burst to take control 11-4. SJLI would hold off UMSV for the remainder of set one claiming it 25-13
  • Set two saw St. Joseph's jump out to a lead midway through the set taking a 13-8 advantage. The Dolphins would then go on a 10-5 scoring run that saw the set tied at 18 a piece. UMSV would claim the second set with a score 25-22
  • SJLI would be led by Kerns in the third set, hitting .600, adding six kills as St. Joseph's took control late with a score of 17-10, before ultimately claiming set three 25-16
  • The Golden Eagles looked to finish the match in four set as they dominated the fourth set with a score of 25-10, with five players each registering at least one kill and totaling 11 kills in the set as a team

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's hit .305 as a team (48 kills, 16 errors on 105 attempts) while holding UMSV to .066 (33 kills, 25 errors on 122 attempts).
  • The Golden Eagles dominated in digs (52-35) and had fewer service errors (10-17), with both teams recording four aces.
  • The match featured 20 tie scores and 9 lead changes.
