Softball Stopped Short By Rutgers-Newark

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball was stopped short in a non-conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark.

Game One: Rutgers-Newark 8, SJLI 7

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's opened the game with two runs scored from Flannery in the first inning and Busa third inning.
  • Rutgers-Newark scored three runsin the bottom of the third to take the 3-2 lead.
  • In the fourth inning, Ehman scored to tie the game and shortly after Busa hit a double to left field for Flannery, Smith, and Lysogorski to score.
  • Brown singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw, resulting in Lommel scoring to boost the Golden Eagles into the lead 7-3..
  • The Scarlet Raiders came back scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to take the 8-7 lead away from SJLI.

Game two: Rutgers-Newark 4, SJLI 3

  • Flannery led the Golden Eagles with one run scored and two hits.
  • Busa recorded one run scored, one hit, and one RBI.
  • Junior Samantha Lugo totaled one run scored and one hit.
  • Senior Caitlyn Herzing recorded eight strikeouts on the mound. 

How it happened:

  • Rutgers-Newark scored the first run in the third inning to start the game.
  • Busa and Flannery both scored in the top of the sixth to take the 2-1 lead, but the Scarlet Raiders answered with two runs of their own to take back the game 3-2.
  • Senior Brooke Bove singled to pitcher for Lugo to score in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but Rutgers-Newark scored one run off a wild pitch, resulting in a 4-3 win for the Scarlet Raiders.
