The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse falls to No. 1 Merchant Marine, 19-6, in the Skyline Conference Semifinals on Wednesday night.
Top performers:
- Junior Sabrina Doyle led the Golden Eagles with three goals and one caused turnover.
- Sophomore Taylor Metzler totaled two goals and one caused turnover.
- Junior Kaitlyn Ippolito recorded one goal, two assists, and one draw control.
- Senior Maggie Harding tallied nine saves and two ground balls.
How it happened:
- St. Joseph's opened the game with goals scored by Doyle and Ippolito to take an early lead, but Merchant Marine answered back with two goals.
- Doyle scored on a free position goal late in the first quarter, but two minutes later the Mariners netted their third goal of the game to tie 3-3 at the end of the quarter.
- USMMA held SJLI scoreless in the second quarter and found the back of the net five times to take their first lead 8-3 going into halftime.
- The Golden Eagles started the scoring in the third quarter with help from Metzler, but Merchant Marine three goal scoring streak, but Metzler netted a man-up goal in the last second of the quarter.
- The Mariners scored six goals in a row throughout the fourth quarter, until Doyle scored a free position shot, but USMMA answered right back to take the 19-6 victory.
Notes:
- The Mariners collected 24 ground balls to the Golden Eagles's 13.
- Merchant Marine won 16 draw controls, while St. Joseph's won 11.
- USMMA lead with 17 caused turnovers compared to SJLI's six.
