Women's Basketball Falls to Manhattanville, 57-50

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team suffered a 57-50 loss to Manhattanville College in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Graduate Casey Travers paced the Golden Eagles with 21 points, and tied for the team lead with 12 rebounds for a double-double. She went 8-for-8 on free-throws
  • Senior Lanyah Ford turned in a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, while adding two steals
  • Julianna Kascic led Manhattanville with 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, shooting 7-for-10 from the field
  • Amanda Orlando scored 10 points with seven rebounds and three assists

How it happened:

  • After a back-and-forth first four minutes of the game, the Golden Eagles took a 7-4 lead on a three-point play for Ford at the 5:48 mark
  • The hosts finished the first quarter with a 7-0 run, with Ford scoring five of those points to take a 14-6 lead into the second quarter
  • St. Joseph's got off to a solid start in the second, scoring six of the first nine points of the frame, with Ford's basket at the 8:09 mark extending the lead to 11 (20-9)
  • One minute later, Travers made a three to give the Golden Eagles a lead of 13 (23-10)
  • Shortly after, Manhattanville found a groove, coming back to score 14 consecutive points over a four minute span to turn their 24-12 deficit into a 26-24 lead
  • Orlando scored the final two baskets during the run, with the second one giving Manhattanville their first lead since the first two and a half minutes of the game. Kascic scored seven points during the stretch
  • St. Joseph's took a one-point lead into the break, with Spina's three-point play with under three seconds remaining putting the hosts ahead 27-26
  • There were three lead changes in the first minute and a half of the third quarter, with Manhattanville taking a five-point lead (36-31) at the 6:27 mark
  • St. Joseph's scored the next four points to trim the deficit to one (36-35), then came back within two again at the 2:18 mark, before Angela Downey scored a three to extend the Valiants' lead to five (42-37) to end the quarter
  • SJLI scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, with junior Felicia Barreiros' three tying the game at 42 apiece at the 7:01 mark
  • Manhattanville took a 45-42 lead on a three-point play for Niyona Smith, then the Golden Eagles took a 46-45 advantage on four made free-throws for Travers at the halfway mark in the quarter
  • The Valiants proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to take a 52-46 lead with 1:58 remaining, then after two more free-throws for Travers, St. Joseph's came back within three on a basket for Ford to make it a one possession game with 1:10 on the clock
  • Late free-throws for the visitors secured a 57-50 win

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 25.4% from the field and 11.1% from three-point range
  • Manhattanville posted a 41.7% shooting percentage from the floor and 15.4% from beyond the arc
  • The Golden Eagles shot 92.9% on free-throws compared to the Valiants' 65.2%
  • Manhattanville held a 45-34 advantage in rebounds and a 22-20 advantage in the paint
