Julianna Knice broke the all-time assist record and senior
Lanyah Ford reached 1,000 career points, as the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team defeats SUNY Purchase, 77-37, at the Danzi Center on Tuesday evening.
Top performers:
- Graduate Julianna Knice recorded five assists, bringing her career total to 314 to set a new program record
- Senior Lanyah Ford scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the field and 5-for-12 from beyond the arc, finishing the game with 1,000 career points. She also led all players with three steals
- Graduate Casey Travers recorded a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while adding three assists
- Carlye Graff and Kaylena Phagnasay each scored seven points for Purchase, with Graff adding a pair of steals
- Jessica McHugh led the Panthers with six rebounds
How it happened:
- The Golden Eagles began the game with an 8-0 run, with Travers scoring five of those points
- The Panthers cut the lead in half (8-4) at the 6:04 mark, then shortly after, SJLI went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 19-7
- Purchase scored the final five points the quarter, but the hosts finished the frame up by seven (19-12)
- Each team exchanged baskets to begin the second quarter, then the Golden Eagles went on a massive 21-0 scoring run to increase the lead to 28 (42-14). Ford scored eight points during the run and junior Isabella Sierra contributed five
- Ford's three at the 7:00 mark gave the hosts a 20-point lead (34-14) during the run, then her three with 4:19 remaining capped the stretch
- The visitors out-scored SJLI 6-4 in the frame's final four minutes, with St. Joseph's taking a 46-20 lead into the break
- Less than a minute into the third quarter, Knice recorded her fifth assist of the game to set a new all-time assist record. At the 9:08 mark, sophomore Megan Spina converted a Knice pass for a layup to extend the lead to 51-24
- Spina's basket sparked an 8-0 run that saw the hosts take a 57-24 lead about halfway through the quarter
- With 56 seconds remaining in the frame, Ford connected for a free-throw which represented the 1,000th point of her career
- The hosts went into the fourth quarter ahead by 33 (63-30) after Halle Greaige of Purchase made a layup to finish the quarter
- Senior Catherine Siounis scored the first two baskets of the fourth, then the Panthers scored five straight points
- St. Joseph's scored the final five points of the game, with freshman Paige Locke's layup at the 3:34 mark putting the hosts ahead by 40 (77-37)
Notes:
- St. Joseph's shot 38.1% from the field and 30% from three-point range
- The Panthers were limited to a 33.3% shooting percentage overall and 8.3% from beyond the arc
- The Golden Eagles held a 52-37 advantage in rebounds and out-scored the Panthers 36-26 in the paint
