Five Golden Eagles finished in double-figures as St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball took down St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn 89-74 on Saturday afternoon.
Top performers:
- Senior Lanyah Ford led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds with three assists and three steals
- Sophomore Megan Spina was 8-for-9 from the field and finished with 16 points and five boards
- Graduate Casey Travers and junior Isabella Sierra added 11 points apiece
- Junior Felicia Barreiros rounded out the top scorers with 10 points while dishing four assists
- A 20-point performance led the Bears by Mercedes Perez
- Destiny Hurt added 15 points
How it happened:
- A closely played opening quarter saw the two teams deadlocked at 17 with just three minutes left on the clock
- A 9-0 over the following 45 seconds run in favor of the Bears gave the hosts a 26-17 advantage with just over two minutes remaining
- After both sides dropped in a couple of free throws, Sierra knocked down a three before a layup from Spina at the buzzer moved the Golden Eagles to within two, 28-26
- A layup from Travers tied the score at 34 with just under six minutes remaining in the second frame
- After an exchange of buckets a Travers layup and a jumper from Knice closed out the half sending the Golden Eagles into the break leading 42-39
- St. Joseph's (L.I.) started the third quarter on a 7-2 run through the first two minutes.
- The Golden Eagles extended their lead into double-digits, 61-49, when sophomore Emma Kelly dished to Sierra for a three with just over three minutes left in the third
- Sierra went back-to-back from long-range with less than a minute and a half left before SJBK's Perez answered with a three of her own moving the score to 67-54 heading into the fourth
- The Golden Eagles used their largest scoring run of the game to build their largest lead of the afternoon, 85-64, with 2:39 left in the game before cruising to an 89-74 final
Notes:
- St. Joseph's (L.I.) shot 52.4% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range
- SJBK finished at 37.5% from the floor and 39.4% from long distance
- SJLI held the advantage in points in the paint (44-26)
- The Golden Eagles received 25 points from their bench to just 13 for the Bears
- St. Joseph's (L.I.) outrebounded SJBK 46-31
