Travers Scores 1,000th Career Point in Senior Night Win Over Farmingdale

Results:

Graduate Casey Travers scored her 1,000th career point on Senior Night as the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team defeats Farmingdale State College, 87-69, at the Danzi Center on Tuesday evening. Travers and senior Lanyah Ford were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Top performers:

  • Travers scored a season-high 23 points with nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Golden Eagles
  • Sophomore Megan Spina scored 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field with five rebounds
  • Graduate Julianna Knice added 13 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds
  • Junior Felicia Barreiros shot 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, contributing 11 points and six rebounds
  • Layla Mendoza led Farmingdale State with 19 points and four steals
  • Taneece Wooden scored 17 points with five rebounds, while Victoria Kantzian added 16 points with four boards for the Rams

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's began the game with a 6-0 run, with graduate Margaret Kopcienski kicking off the scoring with a three at the 9:10 mark
  • With 7:40 on the clock, Travers connected for a three-point basket to bring her total to 1,000 points in her career, extending the lead to 11-2
  • The Golden Eagles proceeded to score the next five points to take a lead of 14 (16-2) about halfway through the quarter
  • FSC's Isabella Greenwald scored a three to make it an 18-9 game, before Spina hit a three of her own eight seconds later to put the hosts up 21-9 at the 3:30 mark
  • The Rams scored the final six points of the quarter, but the Golden Eagles took a lead of six (21-15) into the second quarter
  • After each team exchanged baskets, Wooden connected for a three to cut the lead to just three (23-20) at the 8:53 mark, then the Rams trailed by two (26-24) with 6:18 on the clock
  • With the hosts leading by four (30-26) about 40 seconds later, junior Isabella Sierra made a three with 5:07 on the clock, then Travers scored a three of her own 25 seconds later to increase the lead to 10 (36-26)
  • The visitors came as close as eight in the final four minutes, but baskets for Knice and Travers helped SJLI take a lead of 13 (46-33)
  • Kantzian of FSC finished the quarter with a three in the final seconds to bring the visitors back within ten (46-36) to end the quarter
  • One minute into the third, Emily Pohalski made a three to trim Farmingdale State's deficit to 48-41, before the hosts went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-point lead (56-43) at the 5:36 mark. Spina scored the first 10 points of the quarter for the Golden Eagles, including all eight points during the run
  • St. Joseph's led by 15 (61-46) with 2:30 remaining, then the Rams scored six straight points to cut the lead to single digits (61-52), before SJLI finished the third ahead by 11 (63-52)
  • Farmingdale State went on a 9-3 run to begin the fourth, trimming their deficit to five (66-61) just over three minutes in
  • The visitors trailed by five again (68-63) with 6:18 remaining, then the Golden Eagles went on a 13-0 run to take an 18-point lead (81-63) with 2:56 remaining. Barreiros made a pair of threes to cap the run
  • St. Joseph's padded their lead by scoring six of the final nine points in the game to finish with an 87-69 victory

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 44.4% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range
  • The Rams were limited to a 35.4% shooting percentage overall and 36.4% from beyond the arc
  • The Golden Eagles out-scored the Rams in the paint, 30-26
  • SJLI's bench contributed 41 points compared to FSC's 17
