Results:
The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team fell to the University of Mount St. Vincent, 67-61, in their final home game of the regular season at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.
Top performers:
- Graduate Casey Travers scored a season-high 30 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles. She shot 7-for-17 from the field and went 13-for-15 on free-throws, while adding four assists
- Junior Felicia Barreiros scored 12 points, while adding six rebounds and three assists
- Sophomore Megan Spina recorded a team-high three steals while contributing four points and three rebounds
- Mount St. Vincent had three players finish with double-digit points, with Amber Been pacing the Dolphins with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists, and five steals
- Kira Villegas turned in a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds with two assists
- Kayla Hanley contributed 13 points with four rebounds and two assists
How it happened:
- After the Dolphins scored the first basket of the game, the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead, with Barreiros and graduate Julianna Knice scoring three points each
- Shortly after, St. Joseph's scored six straight points on a pair of three-point shots for Travers and Barreiros, extending the lead to 14-5 at the 4:49 mark
- UMSV scored five straight points moments later to trim their deficit to 16-12 at the 1:58 mark
- A three for Hanley at the 1:08 mark brought the visitors within three (18-15), before each team exchanged baskets to end the quarter, with St. Joseph's leading by three (20-17)
- The Dolphins scored five of the first seven points scored in the second quarter, with Been's three at the 7:19 mark tying the game at 22 apiece
- With the game tied at 24 with 4:14 on the clock, Travers scored the next five points to give the Golden Eagles a 29-24 lead, with her three at the 2:22 mark finishing the stretch
- Travers went on to score two more points for SJLI, as she finished the quarter scoring the final seven points for the hosts before they went into the break up by four (31-27)
- Each team exchanged baskets twice to begin the third quarter, then with SJLI ahead by two (35-33), Hanley connected for a three-point basket to give the visitors their first lead since the opening minutes at the 5:37 mark (36-35)
- After two more lead changes within the next minute and a half, the Golden Eagles went ahead 40-39 on a three for sophomore Emma Kelly with 2:14 remaining in the quarter, before Villegas made a three of her own to put UMSV ahead by two (42-40) 16 seconds later
- A pair of Kelly free-throws tied the game at 42 with 1:42 on the clock, then the Dolphins scored four of the final five points of the quarter to take a three-point advantage (46-43) into the final frame
- Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Mount St. Vincent took a lead of five (50-45) on a layup for Been
- After a Barreiros jumper, the Dolphins went on a 6-0 run curtesy of three-point shots for Hanley and Villegas to increase their lead to nine (56-47) with 4:46 on the clock
- The Dolphins took a lead of 10 (58-48) one and a half minutes later on a pair of made free throws for Villegas
- A three-point play for Travers brought the hosts within seven (58-51), before Mount St. Vincent scored five straight points to build their largest lead of the game. A jumper for JaKaia Lotz at the 2:17 mark put the visitors ahead by 12 (63-51)
- The Golden Eagles went on a 10-4 run in the game's final two minutes to come within six, but it wasn't enough as they suffered a 67-61 loss
Notes:
- St. Joseph's shot 29.5% from the field and 23.3% from three-point range
- The Dolphins posted a 44.7% shooting percentage from the floor and 31.6% from beyond the arc
- The Golden Eagles shot 90% (18-for-20) on free throws, while UMSV shot 61.3% (19-for-31) on free throws
- The Dolphins held the advantage in points in the paint (18-16) and rebounds (41-32)
- Each team received seven points from their bench
