Spina and Travers Drop in 20 as Women's Basketball Beats the Bears, 81-68

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team earned an 81-68 win over St. Joseph's (Bklyn) in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Thursday evening. 

Top performers:

  • The Golden Eagles had two players finish with 20 points and two other players finish in double-digits. Graduate Casey Travers scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double while adding a game-high four steals
  • Sophomore Megan Spina also scored 20 points for the Golden Eagles and added seven rebounds and four assists
  • Sophomore Emma Kelly scored a season-high 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field with five rebounds
  • Junior Isabella Sierra contributed 13 points and a game-high six assists
  • Mercedes Perez led the Bears with 18 points while adding a team-high five assists
  • Destiny Hurt turned in a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for SJBK
  • Grace Kennedy contributed 12 points and nine rebounds

How it happened:

  • A back and forth first few minutes of the game saw an 11-11 tie at the 6:50 mark
  • The Bears took a 14-13 advantage on a three for Kennedy at the 5:37 mark, then Travers responded with a three of her own to take a 16-14 lead with 4:56 remaining
  • Travers scored nine straight points for the Golden Eagles spanning from the 6:50 mark to the 3:20 mark
  • With the Golden Eagles ahead by one with two and a half minutes remaining (18-17), the hosts scored six straight points to finish the first quarter ahead by seven (24-17)
  • SJLI continued their momentum in the second quarter, scoring the first four points of the frame, which then added up to a substantial 15-2 run. Travers scored six points during the run and Spina scored five, with Spina's layup at the 4:47 mark capping the run and extending the hosts' lead to 20 (39-19)
  • The Bears responded with an 11-2 run to make it an 11-point game (41-30) with 1:01 remaining, before the hosts went into the break ahead 46-33
  • A three-point play for Hurt to begin the third quarter cut the Bears' deficit to 10 (46-36) before SJLI scored 11 of the next 13 points to increase their lead to 19 (57-38) at the halfway mark of the quarter
  • The Golden Eagles increased their lead to 20 again (61-41) with 3:08 remaining in the frame on a layup for Kelly, then the hosts finished the third up 63-44
  • SJLI took their largest lead of the game less than a minute into the quarter, as Sierra's three with 9:11 on the clock giving the Golden Eagles a lead of 22 (68-46)
  • The hosts held an advantage of 22 on two other occasions, with Graduate Catherine Siounis' three-pointer at the 4:14 mark increasing the lead to 79-57
  • The Bears scored the next eight points, before the Golden Eagles came away with an 81-68 win
  • The Bears out-scored the Golden Eagles 24-18 in the final frame, but SJLI maintained a lead of at least 14 in the quarter

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) shot 40.2% from the field and 20.7% from beyond the arc
  • The Bears were limited to a 29.2% shooting percentage from the field and shot 29% from three-point territory
  • SJLI out-scored the Bears 52-18 in the paint
  • The Golden Eagles had 25 bench points compared to SJBK's 12
  • The hosts held the advantage in rebounds 55-51
