Men's Basketball Opens Season with Loss to Westfield State

Results:

On Friday evening, the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team opened their season with a loss to Westfield State. 

Top performers:

  • Senior Alec Tabada led the Golden Eagles with 33 points, shooting 11–15 from the field, adding five rebounds, one assist, and one block
  • Graduate Spencer Malloy finished with 16 points and four rebounds
  • Sophomore Kenny Rodriguez totaled six points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals
  • Lid Moreland led the Owls, scoring 18 points, with three rebounds, two assists, and three steals
  • Angel Price-Espada recorded 16 points, one rebound, four assists, and five steals 

How it happened:

  • Both teams relied on solid defensive efforts early in the contest, with the Golden Eagles jumping ahead to a four-point lead as Malloy provided a layup with Tabada on the very next possession hitting a three-point jump shot, making the score 14-10
  • The Owls responded, after falling behind with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes of play before Coletti ended the scoring run with a three-pointer to keep the Westfield's lead to just five with seven minutes remaining in the half
  • Over the final even minutes of action in the first half, St. Joseph's out-scored Westfield St. 24-10 to take a nine-point lead into the second half
  • Westfield opened the second half by scoring 12 points to SJLI's four over the first four minutes to take back the lead early, 44-43
  • As the Owls held a 53-52 lead at the 14-minute mark, an eight points swing in favor of St. Joseph's, with Tabada scoring six in the stretch, helped St. Joseph's retake the lead with a seven-point edge
  • The Golden Eagles would hold the lead for the majority of the second half, building the lead to as much as 10 points (69-59)
  • The Owls turned the game around, going on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 72 a piece 
  • Westfield State built their lead to as much as six points (84-78), with the Golden Eagles cutting the lead to just one (84-83), but it wasn't enough as the Owls secured the 91-84 victory in the end

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 50.9% (29-57) from the field and 30.8% from three-point range
  • Westfield was 31-74, good for 41.9%, while shooting 10.0% from beyond the arc
  • The Owls held a six-rebound advantage, 43-36
