Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team falls to St. John Fisher 64-53 on day two of the Rick Martin/Hampton Inn Classic.

Top performers:

  • Senior Alec Tabada led all scorers in the contest with 20 points, with six rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Graduate Spencer Malloy added a game-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points and one assist
  • Eric Kegler led the Cardinals with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal

How it happened:

  • As the Golden Eagles trailed by two just seven minutes into action, Thomas Bell found a streaking Tabada that converted a fast break layup to tie the game and take the lead after converting the and-one at the free throw line to take the lead
  • After the Cardinals pulled ahead by four (19-14) at the 12-minute mark, St. Joseph's responded by going on a 13-2 scoring run, holding a seven-point lead with five minutes to play in the first half
  • A Malloy three-pointer would give SJLI a ten-point lead with 1:25 left in the half before St. John Fisher responded with back-to-back baskets in the final minute to cut the deficit to just six
  •  The Cardinals took back the lead early in the second half, outscoring St. Joseph's 10-3 through the first six minutes of play to hold a 42-39 advantage
  • St. John Fisher would build their lead up to as much as 12 points with just under five minutes to play in the second half on a three-pointer from Cole Thompson
  • Back-to-back layups from Kenny Rodriguez and Tabada cut the Cardinals lead to just five points (58-53), but St. John Fisher was able to convert on their free throws late to capture the victory in the end

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 31.3% (15-48) from the field and 20.0% from three-point range
  • St. John Fisher was 25-51, good for 49.0%, while shooting 15.4% from beyond the arc
