Tabada Scores 1,000th Points As Men's Basketball Suffers Loss To Stevens

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team suffered a 90-59 loss to Stevens Institute in a non-conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Wednesday evening. Senior Alec Tabada scored his 1,000th career point for the Golden Eagles.

Top performers:

  • Tabada led the Golden Eagles with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, while adding four rebounds and two steals
  • Senior Spencer Malloy scored 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito led SJLI with seven rebounds, while junior Justin Turner led all players with eight assists
  • Stevens Institute was fueled by a 27-point performance for Tommy Scholl on 11-for-18 shooting from the floor and 5-for-8 from three-point range
  • Jack Spellman grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and recorded a double-double with 12 points scored for the Ducks
  • Kyle Maddison contributed 15 points and a team-high five assists and three steals

How it happened:

  • Both teams were tied at eight through about five minutes of play, with Tabada scoring six of those points for SJLI
  • St. Joseph's took their first lead since their first points of the contest at the 13:34 mark, with Tabada connecting for a layup to put the hosts up 10-8
  • The visitors responded by scoring 10 consecutive points to take back a lead of eight (18-10) on a three for Lucas Green with 10:27 on the clock
  • After a back-and-forth next few minutes, Stevens Institute went ahead by nine (25-16) on a three-point shot for Jack Liedtka with 8:18 remaining
  • The Ducks proceeded to go on a massive 11-0 run for their largest of the game, with five of those points scored by Scholl, to take a 36-18 lead with 3:42 remaining in the half
  • Shortly after, the visitors increased their lead to 20 (41-21) on a three-pointer for Scholl with 2:35 on the clock
  • Each team scored two baskets to finish the half, as Stevens Institute went into the break ahead 45-25
  • The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to 15 (45-30) on baskets for Malloy and Tabada
  • The Ducks scored 11 of the next 15 points to extend their lead to 56-34 about five minutes into the half
  • At the 13:24 mark, the Golden Eagles began an 11-0 scoring run for their largest of the night, which trimmed the lead to 17 (64-47). Graduate Student Justin Forest scored seven of those points
  • The visitors took back the momentum with a 13-2 run to bring their lead to 30 points (84-54) with 4:27 remaining
  • The Ducks took a 33-point lead for their largest of the night on their final basket with 1:32 on the clock, before the visitors came away with a 90-59 victory

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 37.5% from the field and 21.1% from three-point territory
  • Stevens Institute recorded a 54.3% shooting percentage overall and 44.4% from beyond the arc
  • The Ducks held the advantage in rebounds (42-36) and assists (24-18).
  • Stevens Institute also led the Golden Eagles in points in the paint (52-30) and bench points (23-15)

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, November 16 when they head to Stony Brook to play the Seawolves for a non-conference match-up at 6:30pm.
