Men's Basketball Season Ends In Quarterfinals

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) Golden Eagles were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 83-62 to Farmingdale State in the Skyline Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

Top performers:

  • Kenny Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, adding three rebounds, one assist, and three steals.
  • Anthony Todd contributed 13 points and two rebounds.
  • Jaiden Gaston added 12 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
  • Corey Sommervil chipped in six points, four rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block off the bench.
  • AJ Esposito recorded four points, nine rebounds, one assist, two steals, and two blocks.
  • Farmingdale State's Liam Buckley posted a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists.
  • Sean Conroy also scored 18 points, with four rebounds, six assists, and one steal.

How it happened:

  • Farmingdale State won the tip and opened with a 10-0 run in the first 3 minutes, featuring layups from Michael Notias and Kentrell Evans, plus a dunk from Robbie Siechen off a steal, forcing SJLI into three early turnovers.
  • The Golden Eagles got on the board at the 16:29 mark with a Rodriguez three-pointer to make it 10-3, but the Rams quickly answered with a Conroy three to push it back to 13-3.
  • SJLI showed life with a 10-3 scoring-run, including another Rodriguez three and a Corey Sommervil jumper off a turnover, trimming the deficit to 13-10 at the 14:07 mark.
  • Farmingdale responded with a momentum-swinging 13-4 scoring run highlighted with Buckley scoring nine straight points for the Rams, as FSC took control with a 26-14 lead
  • The Golden Eagles would cut the deficit to single digits on baskets from Rodriguez and Esposito (29-20), with six minutes left in the first half; In the final five minutes of the half Farmingdale outscored St. Joseph's 18-7 to take a 20 point halftime advantage (47-27)
  • Through the first five minutes of the second half Farmingdale State College grew its lead to as much as 26 (57-31), with baskets from Buckley, Conroy and Michael Notias
  • Back-to-back threes for SJLI from Gaston and Tayshaun Hawkins trimmed FSC's lead to 21 with just under 11 minutes left to play
  • SJLI looked to cut into the lead throughout the second half but the Rams had an answer for every basket as the lead never got below 20 points for the rest of the half
  • The Rams closed out the Quarterfinals matchup with a final score of 83-62 as the Golden Eagles season comes to an end 

Notes:

  • Farmingdale dominated the boards 48-33 (including 17 offensive rebounds) and outscored SJLI 48-28 in the paint.
  • SJLI shot 39.7% from the field (25-63) and 30.0% from three (6-20), while going 66.7% (6-9) from the line. 
  • Farmingdale hit 41.7% overall (30-72), 25.0% from three (5-20), and 85.7% from the line (18-21).
  • The Golden Eagles forced 17 turnovers with 13 steals but committed 18 of their own; Farmingdale had 11 steals.
