April 13, 2024- Patchogue, NY

Results:

The top-seeded St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team claimed their third straight Skyline Conference Championship title with a 3-0 sweep against #2 New Jersey City University in the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Records:

#1 St. Joseph's (L.I.), 25-6, #2 New Jersey City 21-10

Top Performers:

  • Senior Mark Williams finished with a match-best 14 kills with a .440 hitting percentage while adding a match-high nine digs with a pair of aces and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player

  • Senior Quinn Foglia set new program single-match records with his 10 total blocks and nine block assists. Foglia now holds SJLI single-season total blocks (97) and block assists (78) as well as career total blocks (253), block assists (199), and solo blocks (54) program records

  • Senior setter CJ Johnson recorded a match-best 25 assists and added four digs, three kills and two blocks

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles broke a 3-3 stalemate in set one with four unanswered points for an early 7-3 lead. The visitors were unable to gain any ground and a solo block from Foglia put the hosts ahead 13-7 prompting NJCU to take their first timeout. The Gothic Knights managed to come out of the break with two quick points, but a 4-0 run for SJLI moved the score to 17-9 forcing another Gothic Knight timeout. The Golden Eagles kept rolling leading by as many as 11 on multiple occasions en route to a 25-16 win. As a team, St. Joseph's hit .412 in the opening frame with Williams knocking down five kills and Foglia finishing with five total blocks

  • Set two saw the score a little closer with the Golden Eagles holding just a 10-8 lead early. However, a kill from sophomore Luke MacPherson sparked 5-0 run, 15-8, prompting NJCU head coach Carlo Edra to make some changes sending four substitutions into the game. NJCU's new lineup did not fare much better as the Golden Eagles outscored the Gothic Knights 10-6 down the stretch to secure the 25-14 win and a 2-0 match lead

  • Much like set two, the third frame has the two teams within striking distance early on, but with SJLI clinging to a slight 12-11 advantage, five unanswered points provided some distance at 17-11. Later in the set, an NJCU service error gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the frame, 22-13, before a kill from Williams clinched the win at 25-16

Notes:

  • As a team, St. Joseph's (L.I.) hit .319 while New Jersey City finished at -.072

  • The Golden Eagles had an incredible showing at the net with a season-best 18 total team blocks with the visitors recording just four
