The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team lost to USMMA on Saturday.

Top performers:

  • Senior Michael Carere led the Golden Eagles with two goals and one assist, finishing 14-23 on faceoffs with 11 ground balls
  • Junior Nik Allen scored two goals, collected two ground balls, and caused three turnovers
  • Senior Connor Owenburg secured one goal, one assist, two ground balls, and one caused turnover
  • USMMA's Jack Collins and Kyle Hennelly each tallied three goals and two ground balls
  • Owen Barcus of the Mariners ended with two goals and two assists

How it happened:

  • The Mariners opened the game by scoring the first seven goals of the game in just six minutes of action until Carere won a faceoff for SJLI and found the back of the net off a quick offensive push
  • USMMA would go on to score five unanswered goals in the final nine minutes of the first quarter to take a 12-1 lead into the second
  • Merchant Marine Academy kept their scoring streak alive in the second quarter, scoring five straight in the second quarter before a St. Joseph's man-up goal from Allen ended the scoring drought for SJLI as the game entered the half with a score of 16-2
  • The third quarter saw only USMMA find the back of the net as they finished with four goals in the quarter to take a 20-2 lead entering the final quarter of the game
  • Owenburg scored the first goal of the fourth quarter as Carere found the midfielder open in front of the net
  • A caused turnover by Owneburg allowed Allen to secure a groundball and score his second of the game off a counter-attack opportunity
  • The Golden Eagles found the back of the net for one last time out of a timeout call; Carere scored off the pass from Owenburg with just a minute to play in the game

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's added 23 shots to USMMA's 51
  • Merchant Marine's totaled 55 ground balls to SJLI's 26
