Softball Suffers Losses to Old Westbury

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team suffers back-to-back losses to Old Westbury on Sunday.

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Freshman Alex LaBaraba led the Golde Eagles with one hit and one RBI
  • Senior Kate Kiernan, junior Mariah Salvatto, and sophomore Antonia Busa all secured one hit
  • Ashley Pierce of the Panthers finished with one hit and two runs batted in
  • Old Westbury's Gianna DiLillo went 2-4 at the plate with one RBI

How it happened:

  • The game remained scoreless through the first two innings until a Panther double to center field put runners in scoring position, allowing Pierce to single up the middle to drive in two runs
  • Old Westbury scored two runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a Dilillo single to left field that brought home one run
  • The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when LaBarba hit an RBI double down the left-field line, but it wasn't enough as OW captured the game-one victory 4-1

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Busa led the Golden Eagles with one hit, one run scored, and one RBI
  • Kiernan secured two hits on three appearances on the plate, with one run batted in
  • Madison Danin led the Panthers, going 3-3 at the plate, adding two runs scored and two RBIs
  • Old Westbury's Pierce totaled two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs
  • Alaina Reilly of OW ended with two hits, one run scored, and two RBIs

How it happened:

  • After the Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, it was the top of the fourth that saw the Panthers accumulate eight runs on seven hits to take a 10-0 lead 
  • SJLI got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning when Busa hit an RBI single to left field, followed by Kiernan and Salvatto driving home runs to score to close out the fifth inning 10-3
  • Old Westbury added more runs to their lead, finishing the top half of the sixth inning with four runs on three hits to claim game two, 14-3
Next, the Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, April 26, when they travel to Purchase College for a Skyline Conference matchup at 4:00 pm.
