Softball Splits with Baruch on Wednesday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team split with Baruch on Wednesday evening. 

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Senior Kate Kiernan tallied one hit
  • Senior Julia Ruocchio finished with one hit
  • Megan Bell led the Bearcats with two hits and three runs scored
  • Baruch's Carly Quint went 1-2 at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBIs

How it happened:

  • Baruch was able to get on the scoreboard early after holding SJLI scoreless in the top half of the inning; four RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning pulled Baruch ahead 4-0 early
  • The bottom of the second saw the Bearcats add to their lead when a batter was walked with bases loaded to extend the lead by one
  • In the bottom of the third, totaled three runs on two hits, highlighted by a 2 RBI homerun over the right field wall to secure an 8-0 victory for the Bearcats in game one

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Ruocchio led the Golden Eagles, going 2-3 at the plate with one run scored and two RBIs
  • Sophomore Adrianna Cianciuelli secured two hits and two runs batted in
  • Freshman Alex Labarba added two hits, one run scored, and one RBI
  • Bell led Baruch with two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs

How it happened:

  • SJLI got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when a Ruocchio single allowed Labarba to advance to third to set up a Cianciuelli groundout that brought home Labarbar for an early 1-0 lead
  • The Bearcats responded in the bottom half of the inning as Leilani Jimenez singled to shortstop, allowed the runner to steal home later in the inning to tie the game at one 
  • With Amber Danz and Kayla Swanwick on base, a Ruocchio single advanced runners and drove in both runners to score on the throw; moments later, a Cianciuelli single drove in Ruocchio to score to capture a 4-1 lead
  • In the bottom half of the fourth inning, a Baruch three-run homerun from Bell tied the game up at four apiece 
  • The Golden Eagles responded in the next inning as Gabriella Vacchio reached first on an error by the pitcher, setting up Labarba to single to center field that drove in Vacchio to score
  • A single for SJLI in the top of the sixth put runners on base, which saw Kiernan secure an RBI single to center field to go up 6-4 
  • The Bearcats would score a final run at the bottom of the sixth inning, as St. Joseph's held off Baruch's last effort to secure a game-two victory
Next, the Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, April 25, when they travel to Purchase College for a Skyline Conference matchup at 3:00 pm.
