April 27, 2024 - Newburgh, NY

Records:

Mt. St. Mary, 12-18, 12-4 Skyline

Results:

On Saturday, the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball drops two to Mt. St. Mary's.

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Sophomore Antonia Busa and freshman Jackie Flannery each totaled one hit
  • Sophomore Caitlyn Herzing pitched six innings, allowing three hits
  • Chloe Graham and Riley Norwood of the Knights each finished with one hit and one run scored

How it happened:

  • The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when MSMC, with runners on first and second, a fielder's choice allowed the runner on second to advance and eventually score on a throwing error from the shortstop
  • The Knights scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a fielding error on the shortstop, allowing another un to score as Mt. St. Mary's secured a 2-0 game-one victory

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Senior Madison DiPalo led the Golden Eagles with two hits and two RBIs
  • Busa finished with one hit and one RBI
  • Senior Julia Ruocchio and freshmen Gabriella Vacchio and Alex Labarba each tallied one hit and one run scored
  • Graham led the Knights with one hit and two RBIs
  • Norwood totaled two hits, scored two runs, and scored one RBI for Mt. St. Mary's

How it happened:

  • As both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings, the Golden Eagles found the scoreboard first when DiPalo hit a two-RBI triple to right field to give SJLI the 2-0 lead
  • The Knights were held without a run scored until the bottom of the fifth, where they compiled four runs on five hits, highlighted by a Knight single through the right side that brought home one to score, and then a throwing error brought another run in to score as the fifth inning closed with MSMC ahead 4-2
  • After Mt. St. Mary's scored an additional run in the bottom of the sixth, a Graham two-RBI single through the left side brought the lead to five runs as the Knights were ahead 7-2
  • As St. Joseph's looked to mount a comeback, a Busa hit to right field led to a fielding error that drove in two runs to score to cut the lead to just three runs, but a pop-up on the next at-bat closed the game as MSMC took victory in game two 7-4
Next, the Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, April 28, when they host Sarah Lawrence for a Skyline Conference matchup at 12:00 pm on Senior Day.
