Results:
The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.)Â baseball team falls into the elimination bracket of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Tournament with a 12-1 loss at #6 Johns Hopkins University on Friday afternoon.
Key Players:
-
Sophomore Joe Hackal reached base three times and his bunt single in the top of the fourth was the Golden Eagles' lone hit of the game
-
Sophomore Dom Crema knocked in SJLI's only run of the game in the top of the ninth
How it happened:
-
Both starters held their opponents hitless through two innings before the Blue Jays broke through with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. A couple of one-out walks had two runners on before D Whitney home run to left had the hosts leading 3-0. Two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases for a sac fly from C Cyr moving the score to 4-0
-
A two-run home run to right and an RBI single down the third base line in the bottom of the fifth extended JHU's lead to 8-0
-
Hopkins added four more runs over the next three innings before the Golden Eagles managed to break up the shutout with a run in the top of the ninth. Hackal drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a balk and after a ground out moved him up 90 feet, he came in to score when Crema grounded out to the right side
Notes:
-
SJLI starter Jack Kelly suffered the loss allowing eight runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work
-
Hopkins' starter Kieren Collins improves to 6-0 allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts over seven innings
Next up, the Golden Eagles will try to keep their season alive when they face the losers of Arcadia University and Ramapo College in game three starting around 5:30 pm.
