Men's Soccer Captures First Victory of Season on Saturday

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's soccer team secured their first season victory with a 2-0 win over Hunter College. 

Top performers

  • Senior James Dacos scored the first goal for the Golden Eagles, adding five shots with two shots on goal
  • Junior Diego Saravia netted the second goal for SJLI, finishing with just one shot on goal
  • Senior Daniel Dacos and junior Sean Gordon both collected assists in the match
  • Senior Giuseppe Vitale totaled four saves and completed the shutout

How it happened

  • Hunter found the first scoring opportunity of the game when Ben Avakook got past the back line of St. Joseph's and fired a shot at Vitale who was able to corral the ball to keep the game tied in just the third minute of action
  • The Golden Eagles had plenty of scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net until the 32nd minute when Dacos found the ball at the top of the box to score after Gordon's shot hit off the top of the crossbar 
  • SJLI held on to a one-goal lead for most of the second half until Dacos played a perfect through ball that found the feet of Saravia who was able to put it past the keeper for the second goal of the match and secure the Golden Eagles first season victory

  • SJLI collected 26 shots with eight shots on goal to Hunter's six shots and four shots on goal
  • The Golden Eagles had an 11-3 corner kick advantage
  • Four yellow cards were issued in the match, with two being issued to each team
