Women's Volleyball Picks Up a Pair of Sweeps on Saturday

The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's volleyball picked up a pair of non-conference sweeps over John Jay College and Albertus Magnus College in the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

How it happened
  • The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead, 9-2, and managed to maintain a healthy distance coming away with a 25-15 win in set one

  • Set two was played a little closer early on, 9-7, but five unanswered points from the home team provided enough breathing room for the Golden Eagles to come away with a 25-19 win

  • In the final frame, St. Joseph's broke a 13-13 tie with a 4-0 run, but the Bloodhounds stayed within four points ultimately inching to within two, 23-21, but a John Jay service error and a kill from D'Ambrosio secured the 25-21 win to complete the sweep

Top Performers
  • Senior Deirdre Carney led the Golden Eagles with six kills in eight attempts across two sets

  • Vanderhoof added five kills in seven tries with freshman Sarah Hansen also adding kills

  • D'Angelo tossed 23 assists while picking up five digs

  • Freshman Brooke Donahue recorded a team-high seven digs

How it happened
  • As a team, the Golden Eagles hit .500 in set one and held the Falcons to single digits for a 25-6 win 

  • Albertus Magnus rallied in the second set that saw six tied scores and three lead changes. SJLI held a slight 19-16 lead, but five unanswered points created some distance for a 25-17 win

  • St. Joseph's led wire to wire in the third frame led by Hansen's three service aces and a pair of kills to claim the sweep with a 25-11 win
