Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team edged Manhattanville University, 52-47, in a thrilling match-up at the Danzi Center on Thursday evening.

Top performers:

  • Senior Isabella Sierra led the Golden Eagles with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and 3-for-7 shooting from three-point range, while adding four rebounds and three assists

  • Freshman Madelyn Barone scored 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field with seven rebounds

  • Junior Megan Spina tied the game-high with 11 rebounds with two steals and a game-high five assists

  • Amanda Orlando led Manhattanville with 17 points on 7-for-18 shooting from the field

  • Gabby Tucker contributed 10 points and five rebounds, while Kathleen O'Mara and Niyona Smith each grabbed 11 rebounds which tied the game-high

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's built a 5-1 lead in the first three minutes of the game, with Barone scoring three of those points

  • Manhattanville responded by going on a 7-0 run to take an 8-5 lead on a layup for Orlando at the 3:01 mark

  • Sierra made a three-pointer seconds later to tie the game at eight, before the Valiants took back a four-point lead (12-8) on four points scored by Orlando with under a minute remaining to finish the quarter

  • Manhattanville took a lead of six (18-12) on a layup for Esther Ramos, then the visitors continued their momentum with a 9-3 run shortly after to take an 11-point lead for their largest lead of the game (27-16) on a Tucker layup at the 3:19 mark

  • The Golden Eagles responded by scoring the final nine points of the quarter, with five points scored by Barone including a three-point play as the hosts trimmed their deficit to two (27-25) to finish the quarter

  • Spina made two free throws and a jumper to begin the third frame, which gave St. Joseph's a 29-27 lead a minute and seven seconds into the quarter

  • Spina's baskets were part of a 9-2 run for the hosts to begin the quarter, as they led by five (34-29) on a jumper for junior Emma Kelly at the 5:31 mark

  • SJLI led by five again (36-31) with 4:02 on the clock, before Manhattanville scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 36 apiece with 1:41 remaining

  • Each team scored once more, as the score was tied in a 38-38 deadlock to finish the third

  • A three for Tucker put the Valiants in the lead 41-38 right away to start the fourth quarter

  • With the visitors leading by three (45-42) with 5:40 on the clock, Sierra connected with a key three to tie the game at 45 with 4:16 remaining

  • Orlando responded with a layup for Manhattanville before Sierra made a jumper to tie it again at 47 with 3:45 on the clock

  • Senior Felicia Barreiros made two big free throws to put the Golden Eagles on top 49-47 with 1:39 remaining, then Spina made a hook shot 15 seconds later to extend the lead to four (51-47)

  • Sierra added a free throw with under 30 seconds remaining to increase the lead to five (52-47), which was where the game stood as St. Joseph's defeated Manhattanville. SJLI held the Valiants scoreless for the final four minutes of the game

Notes: 

  • St. Joseph's shot 34.5% from the field and 22.2% from beyond the arc

  • The Valiants posted a 25.8% shooting percentage overall and 13.3% from three-point territory

  • SJLI held the advantage in assists (14-6), while the Valiants held the advantage in rebounds (49-44) and points in the paint (26-18)

  • Manhattanville received 22 points from their bench compared to the Golden Eagles' five
