Women's Basketball Defeated by Dolphins, 63-57

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.)  women's basketball team suffered a 63-57 loss to the University of Mount Saint Vincent in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Graduate Student Charlotte Twohig led the Golden Eagles with 12 points while adding four rebounds, three assists, and four steals to tie the game-high

  • Junior Megan Spina and senior Felicia Barreiros each contributed 11 points, with Spina collecting six rebounds and a game-high six assists, and Barreiros went 3-for-7 from beyond the arc

  • Senior Isabella Sierra also tied the team-high with four steals while scoring eight points with three rebounds and two assists

  • Grace Kennedy of the Dolphins scored a game-high 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field with four rebounds

  • JaKaia Lotz collected a game-high 13 rebounds, while Kayla Hanley made four steals

How it happened:


  • Twohig made two, three-point baskets in the first five minutes of the game, as St. Joseph's took an 8-4 lead halfway through the quarter

  • Mount Saint Vincent came back to tie the game at 12 on a basket for Gretta Baker at the 2:05 mark

  • Baker and Kennedy each made threes in the final minute and a half to give the Dolphins a five-point lead (18-13) at the end of the first quarter

  • The hosts cut the lead to one (20-19) at the 5:18 mark as Barreiros and Barone each scored three points in the first five minutes of the second quarter

  • With the visitors ahead by three (22-19), Barone connected with a three to tie the game at 22 apiece with 4:12 on the clock

  • Moments later, Barreiros made a three of her own to put the Golden Eagles in the lead 25-22, before the Dolphins scored five of the final seven points in the quarter to tie the game at 27 going into the break

  • The Golden Eagles instantly took a 31-27 lead on baskets for Twohig and Barone, then Mount Saint Vincent tied the game at 33 shortly after on a layup for Kennedy at the 4:35 mark

  • After UMSV took a 35-33 lead, Barreiros hit a three to put SJLI back ahead 36-35, before the game was tied at 38 shortly after

  • The Dolphins took the lead on a floating jump shot for Erin Smith at the 2:28 mark and maintained a lead for the remainder of the quarter as the visitors went into the final frame ahead 43-41

  • About two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles tied the game at 44 on a Spina layup and a made free throw for senior Hailey Clancy

  • UMSV went on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead (56-46) for their largest of the night at the 4:17 mark. Eight of those points were scored by Kennedy

  • St. Joseph's came within five on two occasions, then the hosts trimmed the deficit to three (58-55) on a big steal and layup for Sierra with 42 seconds remaining

  • A pair of free throws for Spina cut the deficit to three again (60-57) with 36 seconds remaining, but the Golden Eagles were unable to make up the deficit as they dropped this contest to the Dolphins, 63-57

Notes: 

  • St. Joseph's shot 31.3% from the field and 22.6% from three-point territory

  • The Dolphins posted a 40.7% shooting percentage overall and 13.3% from three-point range

  • UMSV held the advantage in rebounds (52-37), assists (18-15), and points in the paint (32-18)

  • Mount Saint Vincent received 36 points from their bench compared to the Golden Eagles' 12

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, January 22 when they visit Yeshiva University for a conference match-up at 7:00 pm.
