Women's Basketball Beats Bears, 77-66

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's University (B.K.), 77-66, in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Senior Isabella Sierra led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, which tied the game-high, on 6-for-13 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds, two assists, and a game-high five steals
  • Senior Felicia Barreiros scored 15 points with four rebounds and five assists
  • Freshman Madelyn Barone contributed 14 points and five rebounds, while junior Gabrielle Andreacchi scored 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds
  • Graduate Student Charlotte Twohig recorded a game-high seven assists with three steals and six points scored
  • All five of the Bears' starters scored in double-digits, with Aaniya Telford leading the way with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point range
  • Nikki Grech recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds
  • Kristen Donovan scored 14 points with nine rebounds and four assists, and Grace Kennedy scored 11 points with eight rebounds and two steals
 

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles held a 7-6 lead through about four minutes of play, then Donovan and Telford hit back-to-back threes for the Bears to put the visitors in the lead 12-7 at the 5:15 mark
  • SJBK increased their lead to seven for their largest of the game (18-11) with 3:11 remaining on two three-pointers scored by Donovan
  • The Golden Eagles scored six straight points to trim that lead to one (18-17), with Barreiros and Andreacchi each scoring three points
  • The Bears went back up by four (21-17) on a three for Kennedy with 26 seconds remaining, then Barreiros beat the buzzer with a three from the corner to cut the deficit to one (21-20) to finish the quarter
  • The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the second quarter, with Barreiros' three-point play giving the hosts a four-point lead (25-21) one minute into the quarter
  • Shortly after, a three for Donovan tied the game at 27 apiece with 8:12 on the clock, then game was tied three more times in the half
  • With the game tied at 37 with 2:38 remaining, Twohig made a three and Barone made a layup to finish the quarter, as the hosts led by five (42-37) heading into the break
  • The Bears went on a 9-0 run to begin the third quarter to take the lead. Kennedy gave the visitors a 44-42 lead on a three, then a jumper for Jasmine Chan-Clayton at the 6:20 mark increased the lead to four
  • Three-point baskets for Twohig and Sierra put the Golden Eagles back in the lead (48-47) with 4:33 on the clock, then with the hosts down by three (53-50) shortly after, freshman Isabelle LeBron made a three to tie the game at 53 with 2:13 remaining
  • The Golden Eagles kept the momentum rolling after a timeout, as Barreiros made a pair of free throws as a result of a technical foul on the Bears, which was part of an 11-2 run for the hosts in the final two minutes of the quarter. Andreacchi scored five points in the final minutes which contributed to SJLI taking a 61-55 lead to finish the third frame
  • LeBron set the tone for the fourth quarter by hitting a three to increase the lead to 64-55 at the 8:33 mark
  • SJLI took a 10-point lead (66-56) on a pair of free throws made by Barone, then a jumper for senior Hannah Greene increased the lead to 12 (68-56) with 6:48 on the clock
  • The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the afternoon on a three for Sierra at the 4:54 mark, as they led by 13 (71-58)
  • SJLI led by 13 again on another basket for Sierra, this time a layup with 4:20 remaining (73-60), as the hosts maintained a lead from that point forward as they earned a 77-66 win over the Bears for their 10th conference win of the season. Sierra scored seven of the final nine points for the Golden Eagles

Notes:

  • The Golden Eagles shot 35.1% from the field and 29.7% from beyond the arc
  • The Bears posted a 42.9% shooting percentage overall and 46.2% from three-point territory
  • SJBK held the advantage in rebounds 45-41
  • SJLI out-scored the Bears in the paint 28-22 and held the advantage in assists (20-16)
  • SJLI received 34 points from their bench compared to the Bears' two
  • The Bears received a technical foul with 2:12 on the clock in the third quarter as a result of an illegal substitution
