Women's Basktball Breaks NCAA Record in 73-26 Win Over Old Westbury

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team broke the NCAA three-point attempts record (85) across all three divisions in a 73-26 Skyline Conference win over SUNY Old Westbury in the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Sophomore Gianna Capone led the Golden Eagles with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field 

  • Sophomore Isabelle Lebron finished in double digits with 12 points all coming from long distance

  • Sophomore Paige Locke grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds 

  • Old Westbury's Sakhmet Lewis scored a game-best 24 points with a game-high 16 boards

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles held the Panthers to just two points, a pair of free throws from Caitlyn Subero, in the first quarter

  • SJLI put up 20 points, 18 of which came via the three. Lebron finished with nine points

  • St. Joseph's extended their lead in the second quarter outscoring Old Westbury 17-6 and took a 37-8 advantage into halftime. Freshman Madelyn Barone was 2 of 3 for a team-best six points in the quarter

  • The third frame saw more of the same with the hosts again scoring 17 points with OW finishing with eight. Capone was 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and went 2-for-4 at the free throw line. Charlotte Twohig grabbed four rebounds and dished two assists

  • The Golden Eagles took a 54-16 lead into the final quarter and held a 19-10 advantage through the frame

  • Capone led the way with nine points all via the three-pointer. Kallie Eichner and Hannah Greene both connected from long distance with Locke and Sarah Hansen rounding out the scoring with a bucket each

Notes: 

  • St. Joseph's finished with 85 three-point attempts breaking the NCAA Div. III record previously set by North Central College (Ill.) in 2014 with 80

  • SJLI shot 25.7% from the field and 24.7% from three-point territory

  • The Panthers posted a 15.4% shooting percentage overall and 25.0% from three-point range

  • The Golden Eagles finished with 75 rebounds of which 43 were offensive. The hosts recorded 30 second-chance points and 51 points off the bench

The Golden Eagles return to the Danzi Center on Wednesday, February 5th when they host Sarah Lawrence College for a conference match-up at 7:00 pm.
