Esposito Powers Men's Basketball Past Maritime in OT Thriller

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team keeps its win streak alive at six with a thrilling overtime win over Maritime, 66-64.

Top performers:

  • Sophomore AJ Esposito led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three assists and four blocks
  • Senior Alec Tabada recorded 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal
  • Junior Anthony Todd posted six points and six rebounds
  • Seniors Ryan McNeely and Matt Coletti each hit two three-pointers in the contest scoring eight and six points, respectively
  • Theo Noble led the Privateers with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals
  • Maritime's Evan Block totaled a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds

How it happened:

  • SJLI took a slight lead early (5-2) just two and a half minutes into the game; Maritime responded, producing an 8-0 scoring run to take a 10-5 advantage with 13 minutes to go
  • The Privateers would hold on to the lead for the next five minutes of action when Kenny Rodriguez would hit a stepback three to bring the Golden Eagles within one (20-19) before Tabada converted on a pull-up jump shot to give SJLI the lead
  • In the final two minutes of the first half, Esposito scored eight of his 10 first-half points to allow St. Joseph's to enter halftime ahead by three (33-30)
  • Maritime would take their first lead since the early minutes of the first half when Jake Devaney converted a hook shot in the paint after Justin Turner missed a layup on the other end
  • At the 11:36 mark in the second half, Matthew Maxwell would cut the Privateer's lead to just one (43-42), but Maritime would increase their lead back up to five three minutes later 
  • Over the next seven minutes, Maritime held a slight lead, securing a lead as much as six points (52-46) before Esposito converted four straight free throws to cut the lead to just two with 3:10 left
  • Esposito provided St. Joseph's with everything they needed down the stretch as the forward assisted on Coletti's three to bring the Golden Eagles within one; Before giving SJLI their first lead since the early minutes of the second on a slip screen off the pass from Justin Forest
  • Theo Noble would again propel the Privateers ahead on the very next possession, converting on a three-point jump shot to make it a 56-55 game with under a minute to play
  • After Maritime hit two free throws to make it a three-point game, Colletti tied the game at 55 with 3.8 seconds left on the dribble handoff from Esposito to send the game to overtime 
  • Noble opened the overtime scoring with a three, as Tabada answered back to tie the game again just 90 seconds into the overtime period
  • As the Privateers would again secure another three-pointer, Esposito responded for St. Joseph's with a layup in the paint to bring the game to one
  • Strong defensive possessions from the Golden Eagles kept the Privateers off the board and allowed Tabada to hit a jumper at the free-throw line to give St. Joseph's a one-point advantage with 1:25 left (65-64)

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 36.8% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc
  • The Golden Eagles held the Privateers to shooting 33.8% from the field and 25.9% from three-point range
  • SJLI held a 44-40 rebounding advantage
  • Both teams scored 24 points in the paint
