Men's Volleyball Splits a Pair on Non-Conference Contests

When and where:

February 15, 2025- Patchogue, NY

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 non-conference sweep over Brooklyn College before dropped a match up with Rutgers Universtiy-Newark, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Match One: St. Joseph's 3, Brooklyn College 0

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 2-4, Brooklyn, 3-9

Top Performers:

  • Junior Luke MacPherson led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills with a .526 hitting percentage and a match-high three aces

  • Freshman Cole Violi added seven kills with five digs with junior Hank Foglia providing six kills hitting at a .556 clip

  • Freshman Ben Donahue put up a match-best six blocks

  • Setter Will Kropp tossed 23 assists with Dominic Ruggiero finishing with eight

  • Chris Mitchell of Kean led all players with 18 kills while hitting at a .424 clip

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in set one, 25-12. MacPherson recorded five kills in seven attempts with three kills 

  • Set two was close in the beginning but SJLI broke a 14-14 stalemate with a 7-0 run en route to a 25-16 win

  • St. Joseph's completed the sweep with a 25-13 win in set three. The Golden Eagles hit .417 as a team with four aces

Notes:

  • As a team, St. Joseph's (L.I.) finished with a .444 hitting percentage while Brooklyn finished at .012

  • The Golden Eagles served eight aces while the Bulldogs recorded two

 

Match Two: St. Joseph's , Rutgers-Newark 0

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 2-5; Rutgers-Newark, 9-4

Top Performers:

  • MacPherson again led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills and picked up eight digs

  • Graduate student Tyler Anderson recorded 11 kills and 12 digs

  • Senior Logan Meyer landed in double digits with 10 kills and collected nine digs

  • Kropp dished 38 assists and assisted on four blocks

How it happened:

  • The first set went point for point throughout but tied at 24, Rutgers got back-to-back kills to secure a 26-24 win

  • SJLI trailed by just two, 13-11, at the midway point but the Scarlet Raiders closed out the frame with a 13-6 run for a 25-17 win and a 2-0 match lead

  • Set three was nearly a repeat of the first set with the sides exchanging points, but this time back-to-back aces from freshman Bryan Frascogna kept the Golden Eagles alive with a 26-24 win

  • St. Joseph's held a lead through the majority of the fourth frame, but Rutgers caught up with back-to-back kills from Aleks Kolodziej, 21-21. The Scarlet Raiders had a couple of match points spoiled by the Golden Eagles and a kill from MacPherson sealed the 27-25 win sending the match to a decisive fifth set

  • Set five was close throughout with the Golden Eagles holding a slight 8-6 lead when the teams switch sides. The sides exchanged points and traded leads down the stretch but ultimately, the Scarlet Raiders came out with the 17-15 win

Notes:

  • As a team, St. Joseph's (L.I.) finished with a .271 hitting percentage while Rutgers finished at .284

  • The Golden Eagles put up nine total blocks with the Scarlet Raiders recording 10
