Men's Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team falls to St. Joseph's Brooklyn, 78-74 in the regular season finale. 

Top performers:

  • Senior Alec Tabada led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, adding two assists and two blocks
  • Graduate student Justin Forest finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists
  • Senior Spencer Malloy contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists
  • Jason Nazon led the Bears with 16 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, one block, and one steal
  • SJBK's Joshua Gordon totaled 15 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, and three blocks

How it happened:

  • The Bears claimed an early lead as Collin Mills scored three straight layups to start the game to give SJBK a 6-0 advantage three minutes into the game
  • The Golden Eagles would bring the game within two points a few minutes later (6-4) before the Bears claimed a seven-point lead with 14:20 on the clock in the first half on a three-pointer (13-6)
  • SJBK would on to the lead through the first 12 minutes of the game until AJ Esposito converted on a jumper to bring SJLI within one, followed by a Kenny Rodriguez three to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game (25-23) with 6:51 remaining in the half
  • Both teams would trade baskets and the lead before Tabada finished a layup in the paint off the pass from Malloy to take a 36-35 lead into halftime
  • Back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half, followed by a layup from Malloy, propelled SJLI ahead by 10 (46-36) with 15:31 to go in the game
  • As the Golden Eagles held onto the lead for the next five minutes, three straight three-pointers from the Bears tied the game at 54 with just over 10 minutes to play
  • The Bears would claim their first lead of the second half, converting an and-one layup from Nazon, pulling ahead by one (57-56) with 8:53 to play
  • With 1:22 left in the game, a three-pointer from Mills extended the Bear's lead to seven before Ryan McNeely responded with a three of his own, and Tabada finished a layup to make it a one-possession game (72-70) with 53 seconds left 
  • St. Joseph's Brooklyn's free throw shooting down the stretch secured the victory for the Bears

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) shot 46.9% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc
  • St. Joseph's (B.K.) finished shooting 40.0% from the field and 32.0% from three-point range
  • The Bears outrebounded the Golden Eagles 43-39
  • SJBK totaled 38 points in the paint, while SJLI had 26 points in the pain
