Men's Basketball Season Ends In Quarterfinals

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team season ends with an 80-58 loss to Maritime in the Quarterfinals of the Skyline Conference Championship. 

Top performers:

  • Graduate student Justin Forest led the Golden Eagles with 18 points, shooting 4-6 from three-point range, adding five rebounds, three assists and one steal
  • Senior Alec Tabada recorded 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists
  • Senior Spencer Malloy finished with eight points, six rebounds, and one steal
  • Maritime's Jake Devaney led all scorers with 28 points, to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks
  • The Privateers Jake Murphy contributed 18 points, four rebounds and one steal

How it happened:

  • Forest would open the game with a three off the pass from Justin Turner to give SJLI the first points of the game, but Maritime's Theo Noble would respond with a three of his own, sparking a 10-1 scoring run as the Privateers held a 10 point lead (14-4) early 
  • The Golden Eagles responded over the next four minutes of play as Tabada, Malloy, and Forest cut the Privateer's lead to just one (16-15) with 10:59 left in the first half
  • As Maritime's Jake Devaney and St. Joseph's AJ Esposito traded layups on back-to-back possessions, Forest would convert on his third three of the half to allow SJLI to take their first lead since the opening basket (20-18)
  • St. Joseph's would secure a lead of as much as six points (25-19) with just under seven minutes to play before a Devaney three tied the game at 29 wth 3:52 on the clock
  • Maritime's Devaney scored eight of the Privateer's final nine points in the half as the Privateers entered halftime with a 35-31 advantage 
  • As Tabada scored the opening basket of the second half, the Privateers responded by going on a 10-0 scoring run to take a 12-point lead early in the second half
  • As the Privateer's lead reached 12 points, a Forest three cut the lead back down to single digits (49-42) before Devaney responded with a three of his own to bring the lead back up to 10 with 13 minutes left in the game
  • Maritime would build upon their lead with a 16-4 scoring run over the next four minutes of play to take control of the game with a 19-point lead (65-46)
  • The Golden Eagles looked to cut into the deficit with back-to-back baskets from Ryan McNeely to make it a 13-point game with 4:41 to go in the game 
  • The Privateers would again build on their lead, achieving another 19-point lead late into the game as Maritime's lead was too much as the Privateers secured an 80-58 victory

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) shot 37.9% from the field and 31.8% from three-point range
  • Maritime finished 46.8% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc
  • The Privateers had 38 points in the paint to SJLI's 20
  • Maritime held a 43-31 rebounding advantage
