Women's Basketball Downed by USMMA, 81-68

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team falls to USMMA 81-68 in a Skyline Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Junior Isabella Sierra led all scorers in the game with 23 points, adding three rebounds, one assist and one steal
  • Senior Charlotte Twohig finished with a game-high six steals with 16 points, four rebounds and one assist
  • Junior Megan Spina totaled 11 points, six assists, three rebounds and three blocks
  • Senior Felicia Barreiros contributed 11 points and four rebounds

How it happened:

  • After six minutes of play in the first quarter, with SJLI trailing by two, Spina tied the game at nine a piece before Sierra hit back-to-back threes to end the quarter and give St. Joseph's a five-point lead (18-13)
  • In the first two and half minutes of play in the second quarter, the Mariners outscored the Golden Eagles 8-2 to take back the lead (21-20)
  • USMMA would go on an 18-8 scoring run for the remainder of the first half as Emily Grassler converted back-to-back jumpers to end the quarter and take a (39-28) lead into the half
  • St. Joseph's cut into the Merchant Marine lead early in the second half, bringing the lead down to just six points (41-35) with 7:37 on the clock before the Mariners answered back, building their lead back up to 16 points (55-39) with just 2:34 left
  • The Golden Eagles would follow up the Mariner's run with a 10-0 scoring run themselves to cut the lead back to just six points with 1:00 minute left on the clock before the quarter came to a close, 57-49 
  • USMMA added to their lead early in the fourth quarter before a Twohig jumper cut the lead down to six points again (61-55) with eight minutes to play in the game
  • Merchant Marine's lead would build to as much as 13 in the quarter until, again, the Golden Eagles were able to cut the deficit to just six points, 73-67, with 1:26 remaining
  • The Mariners secured the victory down the stretch with strong free-throw shooting

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 36.8% from the field and 23.8% from three-point range
  • The Mariners posted a 40.0% shooting percentage overall and 38.5% from beyond the arc
  • USMMA held a 51-31 rebounding advantage

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, February 11, when they visit Manhattanville for a conference match-up at 7:00 pm.
