Softball Splits with St. Joseph's Brooklyn

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team splits conference matchup with St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Monday evening.

Game One: SJLI 10, SJBK 12

Key Players:

  • Sophomore Alexandria LaBarba led the Golden Eagles with three hits on four appearances at the plate, to go along with three RBIs and one run scored
  • Junior Brooke Bove added two hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs
  • Senior Julia Ruocchio finished with two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI
  • Sophomore Jacqueline Flannery totaled two hits, one run scored, and one RBI

How it happened:

  • The Bears took an early lead in the top of the first inning as they collected three runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-RBI single and an RBI single
  • SJLI would cut the lead in the bottom of the second, when Ruocchio would score on an error by the Bears, setting up a Labarba RBI double to left center, making it a one-run game (3-2)
  • In the top of the third inning, SJBK added to their lead with two runs on just one hit to take a 5-2 lead
  • The top of the fifth inning saw the Bears score four runs on six hits, with two-RBI doubles and two-RBI singles as they pulled away from SJLI
  • Bove and Ruocchio both singled to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning, setting up a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to just four (9-5)
  • SJBK secured another three runs in the top of the sixth as they held a 12-5 lead
  • As the Golden Eagles entered the bottom of the seventh inning down seven runs, they looked to rally, as SJLI tallied five runs on six hits, but fell short to the Bears 12-10 in game one 

Game two: SJLI 10, SJBK 2

Key Players:

  • Senior Emily Fenezia led the Golden Eagles with three hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs
  • Ruoochio secured two hits and four RBIs
  • Junior Antonia Busa provided two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs
  • Flannery posted three hits and three runs scored
  • Freshman Kristen Tellier recorded two hits and two runs scored
  • Junior Caitlyn Herzing pitched all five innings, allowing just two runs and five hits, while striking out three batters

How it happened:

  • Flannery led off for the Golden Eagles in the first inning with a single through the left side, setting up Busa for an RBI-triple to left center, which Ruocchio followed with an RBI single through the left side for a 2-0 lead early
  • SJLI added to their lead in the bottom of the third, with a two-RBI single through the left side that brought home both Fenezia and Busa
  • The Bears cut into the Golden Eagles' lead in the fourth with an RBI single to make it a three-run game (4-1)
  • Venezia responded in the bottom half of the inning for SJLI with a two-RBI single down the left field line; Flannery and Fenezia would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch
  • As SJBK would pick up another run scored in the top of the fifth on just two hits, the Golden Eagles would hang on to a six-run lead late in the game
  • With two runners on base, a Fenezia single to first base brought home Tellier to score, setting up Busa with runners on second and third  to single through the left side to bring home Flannery to score and secure the game two victory
