Women's Lacrosse Drops Conference Game to USMMA

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse team drops a conference game to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday evening. 

Top performers:

  • Graduate student Emma Lange led the Golden Eagles with three goals and one draw control
  • Junior Gianna D'Arenzio and sophomore Kaitlyn Ippolito each scored one goal
  • Sophomore Sabrina Doyle secured three assists and one caused turnover
  • Junior Megan Spina added three caused turnovers, three ground balls and five draw controls
  • Gianna Russo led USMMA with five goals, one assist, two ground balls, and one caused turnover

How it happened:

  • The Merchant Marine Academy took control of the game early, as they scored seven straight goals in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead heading into the second
  • USMMA would continue their streak into the second quarter as they found the back of the net just 43 seconds into the quarter before Lange ended the scoring run for SJLI with a goal of her own
  • St. Joseph's would again find the back of the net after the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy scored, when Julianna Gentile found an open Ippolito to cut the lead to seven (9-2)
  • The Mariners would go on to score another four straight goals to close out the first half before D'Arenzio converted on a free-position shot to make the score entering half, 13-3
  • The Golden Eagles would score their first goal of the second half with just four minutes remaining when Doyle found an open Lange on a man-up opportunity as SJLI trailed by 11 
  • USMMA entered the final quarter of play with a 16-4 advantage, as they would outscore SJLI 3-1 in the quarter, as Lange was the only Golden Eagle to find the back of the net in the quarter, as Merchant Marine secured a 19-5 victory

Notes:

  • Senior Maggie Harding finished with nine saves and six ground balls 
  • St. Joseph's collected 15 ground balls to Merchant's 24
  • SJLI was successful on nine of 15 clear attempts
  • The Golden Eagles held a 15-12 draw control edge
