Melody Cope has announced the hiring of
Jimmy Delevante as the new head coach for the Golden Eagles' men's and women's tennis programs. Delevante brings over two decades of competitive and coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels to the Golden Eagles' courts.
A standout player in his own right, Delevante was an All-State tennis player and team captain at Commack High School before competing at Limestone College and Queens College, helping lead nationally ranked NCAA Division II programs. He went on to earn 12 Men's Open Singles Titles, reach the finals of the U.S. National Grass Court Championships twice, and achieve a professional ranking of #150 in the United States after multiple ATP Pro Tour circuits.
Since 2007, Delevante has been a certified teaching professional through the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), earning additional credentials as a USTA National High-Performance Specialist, USTA Training Clinician, and Quickstart High Performance Specialist. His coaching career includes leading the Commack High School boys' tennis team to four county championships in the last five seasons and a Long Island Championship, as well as guiding the Harborfields High School girls' team to the first county championship in school history in 2022.
"Jimmy's passion for the sport, track record of success, and dedication to developing players both on and off the court make him an outstanding addition to our coaching staff," said Cope. "We're excited to see him lead our tennis programs into their next chapter."
Beyond high school competition, Delevante is the founder of Delevante Tennis, a Long Island-based program providing training and development for junior players. He has also served as Director of Tennis at multiple facilities, including the Suffolk Y JCC and Long Island Yacht Club, and as President of the Suffolk County High School and Middle School Coaches Association.
"I'm honored to join St. Joseph's and to have the opportunity to work with such dedicated student-athletes," said Delevante. "I look forward to building a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit that will help our programs thrive."
Delevante holds a Master's degree in Psychology from Queens College and is certified as both a personal trainer and master trainer. He has been recognized as USTA Volunteer of the Year (2021), Suffolk County Coach of the Year multiple times for both boys' and girls' tennis, and Long Island Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2022.
