Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team used dominant interior scoring and timely three-point shooting to pull away for an 87-66 Skyline Conference victory over Mt. St. Mary (NY). The Golden Eagles controlled the boards and protected the paint while capitalizing on transition opportunities and second-chance points to secure the road win.

Top performers:

  • AJ Esposito led all scorers with a career-high 28 points (12-16 FG, 4-5 FT), 14 rebounds, one block, and one assist
  • TayShaun Hawkins added 22 points (7-13 FG, 6-12 3PT, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, and two assists
  • Kenny Rodriguez contributed 10 points (3-8 FG, 4-4 FT), seven rebounds, eight assists, one steal, and one block
  • Jaiden Gaston chipped in nine points (3-11 FG, 3-10 3PT), four rebounds, and two assists
  • Erik Kubelka provided 6 points (2-4 FG, 2-3 3PT) and two assists

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles jumped out early with strong inside play from Esposito and perimeter looks from Hawkins and Gaston; SJLI built a quick lead as Esposito scored in the paint and Hawkins drained threes to push the margin to double digits midway through the first half
  • Mt. St. Mary responded with some timely three-point shooting from Walsh and Rivera, tying the game briefly and keeping it close, but the Golden Eagles maintained control with second-chance opportunities and transition scoring
  • By halftime, St. Joseph's held a 39-27 advantage thanks to 10 offensive rebounds leading to paint points and better ball movement (11 assists in the half)
  • In the second half, the Golden Eagles quickly extended the lead—Esposito continued to dominate inside with layups and tip-ins, while Hawkins hit key threes to stretch the margin to 20+ points
  • Mt. St. Mary fought back with a brief 9-2 run featuring threes from Rivera and Geremino, cutting into the deficit momentarily, but SJLI responded with a decisive 11-1 spurt fueled by Esposito's post scoring and Rodriguez's playmaking
  • The Golden Eagles closed strong with solid defense (holding the Knights to lower efficiency late), timely free throws, and buckets from reserves in the final minutes to secure the 21-point conference victory

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 45.6% from the field (31-68) and 38.7% from three (12-31), while dominating the glass with a 53-32 rebounding edge (16-9 offensive)
  • The Golden Eagles outscored the Knights 32-18 in the paint and 20-6 on second-chance points
