Men's Volleyball Collects First Wins of Season in Tri Match

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team won both matches of their home doubleheader, defeating Curry College 3-0 and Hunter College 3-1 at the John A. Danzi Center Gym.

Match One: St. Joseph's 3, Curry 0

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 3-3; Curry, 3-4

Top Performers:

  • Declan Kerns recorded 12 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, adding one service ace and eight digs
  • Shaun Mischler totaled nine kills, two digs and two blocks 
  • Logan Meyer contributed six kills and 13 digs
  • Chris Sarnicola posted two kills, two service aces, one block assist, and five digs
  • Chase Meyer added five kills and four block assists
  • Dominick Ruggierio secured 35 assists, one block assist and five digs

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's jumped out to a 14-10 lead in set one behind kills from Kerns and Mischler and held on for a 25-20 win
  • The Golden Eagles built another solid lead in set two with strong serving from Sarnicola and efficient attacks, winning 25-22
  • SJLI dominated the third set, pulling away late with blocks from Meyer and Mischler to complete the sweep with a 25-21 victory

Top Performers:

  • Declan Kerns led the Golden Eagles with 18 kills while hitting .292, added two service aces, 10 digs, and three blocks
  • Logan Meyer contributed 11 kills, one service ace, 16 digs, and two blocks
  • Connor Ruais matched a team-high with 16 digs, to go along with one assist
  • Shaun Mischler posted 11 kills on a .292 hitting percentage and a team-high six blocks
  • Dominic Ruggiero dished out 42 assists to direct the offense effectively
  • Chase Meyer added five kills and five blocks

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles took an early 10-5 lead in set one behind strong kills from Declan Kerns and Logan Meyer, but Hunter closed the gap to 12-10. SJLI then ran off four straight points and maintained the advantage to win set one 25-19
  • Hunter took control early in set two, leading by as many as 10 points and claiming the set 27-25 after a late rally fueled by kills from Ahmed Mohamed and Eddy Kang
  • St. Joseph's bounced back in set three, jumping to a big lead with blocks from Mischler and Meyer and cruising to a 25-19 victory
  • In set four, the teams traded points until late when the Golden Eagles pulled ahead with key kills from Kerns and Mischler, closing out the match with a 26-24 win

Up next:

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, February 11 when they host Rutgers-Newark for a non-conference matchup starting at 7:00 pm.
