Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) Golden Eagles led by five at halftime but were outscored 40-20 in the second half, falling 67-52 to Old Westbury in their regular-season finale.

Top performers:

  • Senior Kenny Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, adding seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Senior AJ Esposito recorded a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, and one block.
  • Senior TayShaun Hawkins contributed nine points and five rebounds.
  • Sophomore Corey Sommervil chipped in six points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals off the bench.

  • Joel Ofori posted a double-double with 14 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals.

How it happened:

  • SJLI opened the game with a Rodriguez pull up jumper that he was fouled on as the guard would convert at the free throw line to take a 3-0 lead on the first possession
  • As the Golden Eagles would be down an Esposito jump shot brought the game within one (10-9) before baskets from Rodriguez, Hawkins and back-to-back jumpers from Esposito catapulted St. Joseph's ahead by 10 with 7:50 left in the half
  • The Panthers responded by going on a 12-0 scoring run to take the lead by two (22-20) before SJLI answered to stop the run with a timely basket from Sommervil
  • St. Joseph's ended the half with a 10-2 scoring run before Old Westbury converted a three pointer with just nine seconds left as SJLI went into the half with a 32-27 advantage
  • Old Westbury took back the lead early in the second half as St. Joseph's had three pointers from Rodriguez and Hawkins, and a layup from Esposito to control a six point lead with 14:35 left in the game
  • Over the next 11 minutes of play the Panthers would outscore the Golden Eagles 25-7 as they went up by as much as 12 points with just under four minutes of action
  • The deficit would be too much for SJLI to overcome as Old Westbury took home the victory with a strong defensive second half

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 35.7% from the field (20-56) and 23.8% from three (5-21), while going 7-13 (53.8%) from the free-throw line. They held Old Westbury to 38.7% overall (24-62) and 7-29 (24.1%) from beyond the arc.
  • The rebounding battle was close, with St. Joseph's edging 39-38 (including 8 offensive boards), but the Golden Eagles were outscored 30-14 in the paint and committed 16 turnovers compared to Old Westbury's 6.
