Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team exploded for 11 runs in the first three innings and cruised to an 18-11 non-conference victory over New Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon.

Key Players:

  • Paul McNally went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored
  • Joe Hackal finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored, two walks, and one stolen base
  • Frankie Asaro recorded 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and three runs scored

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, Hackal and Joe Thatcher scored on singles by Paul McNally and Owen Shortell to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles added three more in the second on an RBI single from Asaro and a fielder's choice, then erupted for six runs in the third — highlighted by McNally's three-run single and Andrew Amarando's two-run single — to build an 11-0 advantage.
  • SJLI added to their lead in the fifth collecting four more runs to take control of the game, 15-0 
  • The Gothic Knights found the scoreboard in the sixth inning totaling five runs to cut the deficit to just 10
  • St. Joseph's again pulled ahead with three runs in the top of the eighth inning as two walks scored runners for SJLI
  • NJCU looked to mount a comeback late as they posted six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, to make it 18-11 but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles held on for the victory

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's pounded out 14 hits and drew 13 walks
  • John Perino's five scoreless innings set the tone for the dominant start.
