Baseball Bounces Back with a Sweep Over Purchase

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Purchase on Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took the opener 8-5 before pulling away for an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.

  • Paul McNally went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs, and a run scored
  • Joe Hackal finished 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, two runs scored, and a walk
  • Joe Thatcher contributed 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs
  • Ryan Kurre posted 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and a walk

How it happened - Game One:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on Kurre's triple, Hackal's RBI triple, and McNally's RBI groundout.
  • The Golden Eagles exploded for five more runs in the second inning, highlighted by McNally's two-run single, Thatcher's two-run triple, and Amarando's RBI single.
  • Frankie Asaro added a solo home run in the third inning to make it 8-0.
  • Purchase mounted a late rally with four unearned runs in the fourth inning thanks to St. Joseph's errors, followed by one more run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
  • John Moeller (W, 2-2) earned the victory, throwing 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.

  • The Golden Eagles added a run in the second on Bunce's sacrifice fly.
  • Hackal would single to center field to bring in two more runs for SJLI to bring the lead to 6-1 heading into the fifth inning
  • The Panthers would score three runs combined in the fifth and seventh inning to cut the deficit to just two (6-4)
  • St. Joseph's pulled away with two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on McNally's RBI single and Thatcher's sacrifice fly.
  • Ryan Reynolds earned the win with a strong 4.1 innings of relief.

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) recorded 25 hits across both games (12 in Game One, 13 in Game Two) while taking advantage of defensive opportunities.
  • The Golden Eagles improved to 15-15 overall with the doubleheader sweep (records adjusted post-games).
  • Multiple extra-base hits powered the offense, including four triples in Game One.
