The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse upsets Farmingdale, 9-8, in the regular season finale on Tuesday evening.
Top performers:
- Junior Sabrina Doyle led the Golden Eagles with three goals, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
- Senior Julia Stolba recorded two goals, two assists, one ground ball, three caused turnovers, and 12 draw controls.
- Sophomore Taylor Metzler totaled two goals and two assists.
- Junior Kaitlyn Ippolito tallied one goal, two assists, three ground balls, one caused turnover, and two draw controls.
- Senior Gianna DArienzo recorded one goal, one assist, and one ground ball.
How it happened:
- Farmingdale opened the game with the first draw control and goal scored, but St. Joseph's shortly answered with a man-up goal from Doyle to tie the game
- In the closing minutes of the first, Doyle and Ippolito netted one goal each, but the Rams scored off a free position shot with 10 seconds left to close the quarter 3-2 SJLI.
- FSC tied the game midway through the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles scored two goals to take the 5-3 lead into halftime.
- The Rams scored off a free position late in the third which was followed up by Metzler scoring from Ippolito.
- The Golden Eagles proceeded to score more two goals and Farmingdale scored one, with SJLI leading 8-5 into the fourth quarter.
- FSC came close in the fourth quarter, netting two goals to shorten St. Joseph's lead by one, until a free-position shot from Stolba sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles despite the Rams late goal. SJLI takes the 9-8 conference victory.
Notes:
- Senior Maggie Harding made eight saves and had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- The Rams collected 16 ground balls to the Golden Eagles 15.
- St. Joseph's won 14 draw controls, while Farmingdale won five.
- SJLI lead with 12 caused turnovers compared to FSC 6.
